Thai politics putting my life on hold

Post by HHCanuck »

Is it only me or do other are other expats feel concerned about the political mess that is Thailand? I feel my life is on hold as I am reluctant to purchase/build a house or buy myself a Harley. I have this nagging feeling this country is going to explode soon and I will have to get my family out of Dodge in a hurry. If it does explode into anarchy you know Farang and families will be targeted same as what happens in every other country in crisis. Maybe I'm just stressing too much.

Well it seems any political uprising here is like a pan of liquid on the heat..there's the risk of it boiling over & causing a real mess, but for a few years now it would seem there's enough heat to bring things up to boiling-point, then simmers a while, then rises again..and so on.

Has it ever been stable here for any real amount of time.

The political situation is always "about to explode". Maybe you'll get periods of 5-10 years of relative stability then it flares up again.

In what way do you expect to be targeted, exactly??

Thailand is always like this. Best advice is not to read or watch the news and just get on with enjoying yourself.

There is a person, not to be mentioned specifically, that is loved and respected by the majority of Thais of all political persuasions. I believe this person may be the glue that holds total anarchy in check just by being present in this country. If/when this person passes into the world of reincarnation, I believe anything can happen.

I am very happy to no longer own property in this country as my position now is much more flexible.

I agree with HH in that once a certain person passes on I think Thailand will be in quite a dire situation with no end of infighting, especially now that Mr. T is on his way back

Personally, I'm not as worried about the future as I was a few years ago. I think that the backdoor deal that allowed the present government to stay in power shows a compromise that suggests that things might not fall apart on the big day.
I've a feeling that the 2010 demonstrations and subsequent crackdown left many at the higher end of Thai society on all sides realising that if things continued in that vein, something drastic might happen that would leave them all in the mire.

Its been a powder keg ever since I've been here - just do it, Thais dont seem to bothered about the whole power struggle so why should we!

I think if its political instability, then there is no real danger to tourists or expats,as we as a group don't play any part in thai politics.
If it was unstable here because of religious differences, then thats a different kettle of fish, and i would almost certainly be leaving thailand.

There is only 1 guarantee in life......

And that is that we will all die.....

What is not guaranteed..... Is when or how we will die......

So enjoy life...... Do what you want to do..... And do not worry about things that you cannot control or influence.......

As has already been said, enjoy yourself rather than worry all the time. Since I first came her to live 23 years ago for various reasons I have never put all my assets here and never will do. Should it be necessary I can up sticks and go back to the UK and I am prepared as a last resort, albeit very unwillingly, to sacrifice everything my wife ( mainly) and I have here.

Meanwhile I am lucky in that I work abroad and and enjoy my leave periods spent here. After the first ten years I did go through a phase where it got too much for me and moved out for a few years. This only showed me how much I missed the place. I am now back, a calmer person and enjoying a relaxed lifestyle again. Like many others I get frustrated with many aspects of life here but realize it is out of my hands and just settle in the knowledge that I have a choice which many others don't.

Throughout all of the military coups sine I first came and general political upheaval Hua Hin has not really had any disruption so If you are allowing the politics to disrupt your lifestyle then perhaps you need to make some changes.
