Jewelry stores in Hua Hin

Post by Chromeman »

It is not impossible that I will be on the hunt for an engagement ring during my stay in March in Hua Hin. So I wondered if any of you could recommend a jewelry store in Hua Hin who do not ask for double the price from farrang customers?

Don't worry, you will not be robbed. Gold price is the same for farangs as for locals.
The price of the ring is calculated from the official gold price by weight on the particular day of purchase. Official gold prices are quoted daily in the newspapers and posted in the jewelry shops.
The price is annotated in baht gold. I forgot how many grams to a gold baht, but look it up on Google. Add to the gold price a small amount for the goldsmith work. If you buy a ring with a stone you may wish to shop around to compare prices. You may use any jewelry store in Hua Hin. They will issue a receipt stating the baht weight gold content and the authenticity of the stone. In my experience, no reason to worry.
Good luck.

OK, sounds good. My mother (who lives in Thailand) has told me that she has experienced several times that she get told a different and higher price for jewelry than if she sends a thai friend to buy the same piece.

There is jewelry and there is jewelry. I am basically talking about gold items. So if in doubt, bring a Thai friend..

The gold you will find in the authentic Thai shops (those clearly recognisable by their red shop fronts with gold lettering) and which is sold by baht weight, is pretty close to 24 carat. It is therefore very soft, and is a different colour to the 9, 14 or 18 carat gold you get in Europe etc.

Just be aware that when it comes to buying the wedding ring you will need to be able to match the gold.
