Water Pump Problem.

This subject could have its own forum, I'm sure...Apologies if somewhere else here.

Have Hitachi 125 ex with an underground tank.

Anyway, since that storm last week and the power being off all day our water pump has been playing up.. The problem is it runs for nearly 2 minutes building pressure before cutting off. When the electric returned it was running continuously with a humming noise and not stopping for several minutes, before I cut the power to it. In the morning I decided to prime it by putting water in the cap on the top, at least that got the pump to pressurize with the normal noise. However there seems to be a lot of air and sometimes no flow..

My questions are,,,,Have I put too much water in the pump to prime it? Does the pressure switch need adjusting?,,and/or is the foot valve faulty. Doesn't seem to be any leaks

Ours is sometimes run dry by less observant members of the household. It can take a couple of goes at priming it to get it started.

The other thing that happens is sometimes the toilet mechanisms stick and this causes the machine to run for a longer time. When I hear this I do a quick check of all the loos and usually find this to be the case.

You have to get all the air out of the lines. I used to prime mine after it ran dry but it still would act up until I turned on a tap (furthest away from the pump) long enough to stop the sputtering and get all the air out of the lines. If that took too long, I had to prime it again. Mine was a Mitsubishi, but I used to prime it to overflowing so I don't think you can put too much water in.

Thought I had sussed it this morning by adjusting the pressure switch screw in a little, but now it has gone back to the 1 minute plus run until cut out. I have checked all the loos and any other places I can see for leaks, but still have the air, I can hear especially when the cysterns are filliing.

Will try the furthest tap in the garden for a while to purge any air out see if that works.

Had a look at the pump again this afternoon, and have now noticed a hissing sound(no water leak) coming from somewhere on the pump assembly or header tank. Don't know if this is a normal PRV or a leak.

Anyone know if this is indeed a problem and could the cause. GN.

Mine doesn't hiss and is a the same make as yours! This could be where the air is getting in?
