I'm not sure what this is, but I'm seeing a lot of advertising around town. I see the special T Shirts are being sold at 199 Baht each in Market Village.

The Google Translate version of the accompanying Thai text says:

I believe it's a bike ride to celebrate the King's birthday, but would be grateful if somebody could clarify.

I've always found the Thais cyclists that I've met on cycle rides around the area to be a very friendly bunch indeed and I would have thought that anyone would be very welcome, whatever country that they come from.

Royal stuff is Thai stuff. Its not a jolly little bike ride, its all about reverence and devotion. My Thai lady friend, shook her head when I mentioned it and said 'For Thai people'. First week in Dec, low profile for farang.

When you consider all the crime, mayhem and vice that Farangs get up to in Thailand, it's bemusing that they get upset if you go on a charity cycle ride.

Has anyone considered the possibility that maybe they just don't want to make foreigners feel like they have an obligation to take part in such events? Many also don't see any reason why foreigners would be interested in the first place. It's no big deal. It's a Thai event at the end of the day, so only promoted in Thai, but I seriously doubt you'd be shunned or turned away. Quite the opposite actually.


Oakdale, don't just assume your friend is correct simply because she is Thai. They get it wrong sometimes as well - just depends on what sort of mood they're in at the time.

Am I the only one who has heard the Thai lady advertising the event, in English, on several local radio stations? She has been encouraging the purchase of the special T-shirts at Market Village on 1 Dec. The proceeds from the sale of these shirts will go towards a charity. Maybe the event is being advertised this way for all of the English speaking Thais

Very few of the events in Hua Hin are marketed in English (the posters are all Thai) which gives you the impression that the authorities are not interested in extending the invite to foreigners. This has always been the case in Hua Hin which is predominantly a Thai tourist town, you'll see the opposite in places such as Phuket and Samui. Its very frustrating for us who would like to publish these events so that people actually know whats going on here and when.
