Organic food/restaurant in Hua Hin?

Post by mariadem »

Hello!

We're going to Hua Hin in february-april with our two kids (2 years and 4 months). At home we only eat organic food, but I understand that maybe that will be hard to keep when we're travelling.... But I wonder if anyone knows if it's easy to find organic food in Hua Hin? Or in Cha Am? I'm interested in recommendations of both restaurants and supermarkets or health food stores. :D

I also wonder if anyone knows if it's possible to rent/buy used prams/car safety seats anywhere around Hua Hin (or maybe it's even better in Bangkok, since we'll go by taxi from Bangkok to Hua Hin when we arrive...) Maybe I should ask that in another forum?

Thanks!

Kind regards,
Maria

Hi Maria

There are several places in Hua-Hin that sell baby stuff like prams and etc. Not sure about a pram, but I do know someone with a car seat which they no longer need. In fact, I doubt they ever got to use it. If you want I can ask them if they are willing to sell it.

As far as organic food is concerned, I think you'll just have to forget the idea altogether while you're here. It honestly isn't something the Thais give much thought to at all. We were growing almost all our own herbs and vegetables at one point, but since we rarely get municipal water here in drought stricken flooded Borfai, we don't bother anymore.

I would think the night markets are your best bet. But hard to really tell if untreated by pesticides even though they look like small growers

There is organic fruit and vegetables available at most major stores we've found so assume these chains will have them in HH also; Macro, Foodland, Villa, Tops, and sometimes Lotus. It's always in a different sub-section of the display, packaged, and it's labeled in Thai and English. The wife says there is usually a separate section of loose veggies and fruit near to the organic section but they're not tagged so unknown if organic or not. She never found organic meats here though...i.e.,labeled antibiotic free, range fed etc. We've never seen canned or bottled foods/juices labeled as organic as you find in the west. Pete

You'll find that 99% of the fruit and veg sold at the markets all come from the same farms, and I can assure you, they are sprayed. If you see a Mom and Pop shop selling a few bunches of bananas and/or a few papaya, then that will usually have come from someone's garden, so probably organic.

I don't mean this in a bad way, but for the vast majority of Thais, "prettiness" is more important than healthiness, and growing "pretty" organic foods in your garden is virtually impossible in Thailand, and even more so if you are growing on a large scale.

I have also never come across organic meat, other than the chickens we slaughter at home.

im trying to move to an organic diet and also trying to buy hormone/antibiotic free meat.
Apart from growing/breeding them myself, which i plan to do when i move to my next house,i have come across a few outlets selling the products
market village tescos sells hormone/antibiotic free chicken and pork under the brand name "pure" its about double the price of normal meats
villa market sells hormone free pork/chicken under the brand CP,look for kurabota pork and double check label
Villa market also sell a range of organic vegetables.
there is a french butcher on soi 88 that also sells a range of hormone/antibiotic free meats,
Some of the imported australian and nz beef an d lamb is grass fed, which might cut down on hormones.
Also google paleo robbie in bangkok who sells pre made paleo food, this is also free of any chemicals.
If you are in need of a cheap oven to cook these foods i would highly recommend the turbo convection oven it costs around 1000bht from tesco/index/home pro

If you find any other places please share

1. Golden Place next to the palace
2. Mini Farm soi 88 (http://www.minifarmgroup.com/mf_index.html)

We used to regularly buy "chemical free" (as opposed to organic) vegies in Golden Place. Until about a month ago. We got some young Choy Sum (among other stuff) but never got around to using it. When we fished it out of the fridge nearly 4 weeks later it was still looking fresh and green. A new keep-fresh strain, maybe the fridge was just the right temperature or ... ? We just buy from Tesco, Big C and Makro now.

Eggs is another question. We know Takiap's free range chickens lay organic eggs, and they do taste different than store bought eggs to be sure....per my taste testing my daughter's chickens/eggs in the US. Do any stores or markets here sell organic eggs from free range chickens? Pete

Hi again and thanks for all your answers! I'm glad your so extremely quick and helpful!! :D

Now we're in Cha Am, and I've found some organic ("chemical safe") vegetables on Macro, but it was harder with other products, like meat and dairy (butter), herbs and spices, eggs etc. Even root vegetables (except for beet roots) I didn't find.

We will go to Villa Market next time and see if they have more.

Detergents, soap, dish washing powder/tablets etc was also hard to find without perfume and other bad chemicals...
Does anyone know a brand or marking that we should look for? It was no use asking at the store, noone understood what I meant...

We're also looking for organic diapers, toilet paper and towels, does anyone know where we can find that?

Maybe there's a store that's specialized on whole foods, organic hygiene products etc somewhere near that sells all we're, or are there separate stores for everything here in Thailand? Coconut products (organic of course!) are another thing we're looking for....
Well, many questions... I understand that you're maybe not able to go through them all, but I hope anyone has the answer on any of them!

Many thanks!

What about the royalty sponsored shops? The one near the palace (forget name) used to sell a lot of organic stuff. Mostly to rich Thais as it was not cheap.

Other organic places seem to have disappeared. Gone bust I suppose as for the ordinary shopper they were way way too expensive.

There is also a belief that all Thai fresh fruit and veg is untarnished by supplements and insecticides which is cobblers

What about the Mini Farm (I think that's what it's called) with restaurant attached on Soi 88. Do they do organic?
