Re: 101 tips and advice for visitors to Hua Hin
Never show the bottoms of your feet if possible or point with them and like wise never touch or pat the head of a Thai person who you do not know. Lets see what else. Hong Nam is bathroom if you need one and be ready for the squat ones with a bucket to wash and no TP....grrrr

One word is not a story but it is the beginning and end of one.

So,so many tourists who I meet have somehow been brainwashed into going to 'Monkey Mountain'..as if that is the No.1 attraction here..True, the views are wonderful, with a nice sea breeze..BUT the monkeys there are nasty little b******s, they will stalk you, grab your bags, plague you..please be aware of this if you choose to go there. (please leave your bags in the boot of your car or back at your hotel).
IMO take a tuk-tuk/taxi 15mins further south & visit Kao Tao temple & hill-top Buddha..nice & pleasant down there, & you can still (after a walk up the steep woodland path) stand on the hill with a big Buddha looking down on you.

Following on from my post above..DO try take the time to go up to the view-points on the hill on the Western edge of town. The area is generally known as 'Hin-Lek-Fai'..& a tuk-tuk/taxi will take you there no problem & will wait for you. It has 3-4 wonderful viewing areas overlooking Hua Hin, there is no admission charge to this area, plus there's a cafe for coffee, ice-cream etc..late afternoon when it's a bit cooler may be the best time to have a wander around up there.

Have we reached 101 yet..??
One more place to go (on my list) here in H.H. is to the Centura Hotel
(formerly the 'Sofitel') for one of their afternoon 'High teas'. Sit in the hotel's museum lounge, surrounded by artifacts from the days of the realm & enjoy the ambience.
Dress smartly, arrive there from 3pm onwards, & enjoy a colonial style buffet afternoon tea.
Big choice of coffees or teas (My favourite is the wild cherry tea).
Then help yourself to the mouth-watering choice of delicate sweets & savouries on offer..all freshly made/baked..price is around 600b (i think)..but award yourself.

Seriously though it is good and I've done it with friends staying there but can any old sod just walk in well dressed?

Do not be fooled when you go into Burger King or Maccy-D's if all you fancy is a simple burger..ALL their menus seem to only show the meal options..put your glasses on, & indeed in very small print on each of their menus you may find they do sell burgers on their own.
McDonald's at the Market Village is much cheaper (& has offers) than the one near Silhom Hotel.

Yes Richard..'any old sod' can indeed walk in there to have one of their teas..it is not restricted to hotel clients only..plus you've seen the way I dress, & they still welcomed me..

If you date (invite for a meal) a 'nice' girl don't be surprised if she brings a shaparone. If she brings the family.....run
Holding hands (along with pointing with feet and touching the head) is considered crude by many Thais. As for kissing in public....beware
Occasionally of course the third party on a date will be an active smartphone so learn to talk to yourself

Despicable... absolutely despicable!Big Boy wrote:I do it quite oftenoakdale160 wrote:I have NEVER seen anybody point with their feet in all my life.

I used to do it often too. If I was sitting on an armchair or edge of the bed, and was required to identify an object in a position lower than myself... my leg got stuck out and my toe pointed.
It wasn't only me then. Now off to ring the 'ex' to inform her...

If you are invited to visit the family and village when dating a girl ensure your wallet is prepared.
When offered food do not decline even if you only eat a morsel. It is considered rude and an insult if you refuse. On the other hand never completely clear your plate as that indicates you have not been given enough and where the food is placed in the centre of the table for all to share do not fill up your plate.
If you (as many Thais do) use your hand to eat food always use your right hand. Your left hand is purely for wiping your arse. (A bloody pain if you are left handed like me
). This also applies in many cases to giving and receiving of any articles.

A very important point to remember is Thailand is different in almost all villages or provinces in certain small ways. So what you may be told by a seasoned resident expat who's experienced life in one part of Thailand most likely will be different in another part of the country.
None of us (farangs) no matter how long we've been here doing whatever we have done knows it all. We are carry 'L plates'

If your hotel bathroom is fitted with a toilet hose, try using it.
It seems a much more hygienic method than loo paper..
..but it'll make you jump the first time..

I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly...

Show respect to monks.
If they walk towards you, stand out of their way to let them pass.
Don't have any sort of physical contact with them.
