How many grains of rice?

Post by PeteC »

Another thread reminded me of this. How many grains on average are on each rice stalk? I've received answers from Thais of anything between 50 and 500. Silly trivia question but perhaps a secret known only to rice farmers. :D Pete

My partner has done a bit of rice farming on some land she was given by the family up in Issan but I don't know the answer to your question Pete.
At a rough guess I would say that there are about 20 grains per ear but the number of ears per plant seems to vary a lot and I imagine it's dependent on conditions.
Here's a picture of some of the families rice being threshed a few years ago.

A quick googling of this gives a couple of answers: 200, over 100+.

I know I have listed this on another thread. It is relevant to this topic. The Hairy Bikers went to a rice field and in the programme it shows how rice is planted, how long it takes one rice planter to plant, really interesting. It is available on the BBC I player : Well worth a watch :)
