why do you rarely see sailing boats on the sea in Hua Hin?

So what is going on around here and where does it happen? This section is for discussion on local events, festivals, and holidays as well as activities and things to do.

Small boats and old bones - sounds familiar! I'll be looking out for you. Meanwhile I'll check out the access to the beach at Soi 94 and see if it's suitable for my 11' pram dinghy. It has a balanced lug rig, not designed for great speed, but efficient and forgiving. Many years ago Brighton Sailing Club, where I sailed my Mirror, had a small fleet of Toppers. Great beach boats, I seem to remember, especially if there's a bit of wind.
By all means contact me at nonoah47@gmail.com if you would like to meet up when you are back here in April.

I believe there is a Russian/French :? guy (Vladimir?) starting a dinghy school in Pak Nam Pran or Pranburi, I forget where exactly. Might be worth investigating.... I have his number if anyone is interested. I will be looking at purchasing a racing dinghy hopefully sometime this year. Would be good if we could get a few races on the go.
The last two second-hand sailing dinghies that went on sale via this forum were sold within a few days of posting

I imagine you would have to buy new through Bangkok. Haven't found many second-hand......
I need to go search too.

Building your own dinghy is not rocket science. I taught myself when I came to Hua Hin and started to get withdrawal symptoms, having had boats for many years. It's all there on the internet. If you can use a saw, hammer and screwdriver there's not much else to it …… well, perhaps a bit. Hardest part is choosing a design. I have many plans here if anyone wants to have a look. A good place to start is www.duckworksmagazine.com . Otherwise all are welcome to contact me on nonoah47@gmail.com.
Had a look at Soi 75 - definitely better than 77, unless you can physically carry your boat down steps. 75 has a ramp, though parking isn't brilliant and you have to reverse into Petchkasem.

Layman, you forgot to add: a garage, a bundle of time and a sh*t load of patience....... :D
I would be interested in checking out your projects. As for time and patience... I haven't got an ounce of either.

Fair comment. Trouble is it's addictive, so somehow you find the time and summons the patience.
You're welcome to check them out. Drop me an email. Cheers.

Same problem as owning a car in Hua Hin... no place to park it.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

I think a big part of it is lack of easy access for launch and recovery and a lot of people don't enjoy single handing.
I have sailed from childhood and restored my late fathers yacht.
I sailed it for four years but got so fed up of being let down with crew as single handing around the busiest waters of the south coast of the UK is hard work.

Dinghy sailing is great fun but can be very phisically demanding especially on older more stiff body's and out here in Thailand I would be very mindfull of single handing as you don't have the RNLI or the coastguard to come to your aid in an emergency and there are very few boats out there.

It also wouldn't be easy to check on the weather before venturing out so a little farang dinghy club would be a great idea so you can go out in numbers and be safe.

Although I'm quite a big farang, that's an idea I've carried around for a long time. Judging by this thread there seem to be a few people interested, so how about getting together to chat about it?
Invite Vladimir(?) too, see where he is at with his scheme.

It's something I would be interested in for the future, I also used to sail as a youngster, Mirror, Enterprise, National 12 and Laser dinghy's and I did a bit of yacht sailing later when I was in the Navy.
Does anyone know of any dealer who sells a new cruising type dinghy in Thailand? I was looking at an RS Venture but I believe that the RS dealer that was over Pattaya way has now pulled out of Thailand.
