Expat Police Volunteers

Post by richard »

As a matter of interest does Hua Hin have any expat police volunteers as I know Phuket do?

If so who are they and what do they do?

I know of 1 person who used to act as an 'on-scene' translator should the need arise, this is for the Tourist Police though not the 'real-ones' :D

Pattaya has a pretty big organization.

^ Yeah, I've seen them in Pattaya in uniform and was quite surprised.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

I can only say that on the few occasions I have seen them in the Walking Street :agree:

My Mrs got asked by the Tourist Police about 3-4 yrs ago ..knowing I'd been 'in town' for quite a few years & chatted to tourists on a daily basis..(do I need a work permit for talking bo***x to visitors every night..??)..anyway,- would I do this for them?..I did'nt mind at all if at the end of the day I was helping tourists here..but my dear wife politely told them I was unable to help.
(This maybe signifies my dear good lady's views towards HH MiB..??).

Hi Richard

Phuket, Pattaya & Chang Mai have Expats working for the Tourist Police, but nothing in Hua Hin.

In Phuket they are required to work so many days over a 3 month period and they patrol with regular Thai police, receiving appropriate training. They have to buy their own uniform and equipment. :(

Yes Im surprised a city like Hua Hin does not have Ex pats working with the Tourist Police or they do not have volunteers
to assist with police / foreigners at the station?

I guess a work permit would be required as well??

I know an expat who regularly works with the Tourist Police. No uniform, though, and I do not how official this arrangement is. He gets called by Tourist Police fairly often when situations arise.

That's right Farang.
Hua Hin also have their share of a few farangs who works for the tourist police.
This is actually no secret and a few of them are even equipped with a uniform!
The only questions is; where are they?

I know this arrangement has been in place for a long time now - especially in Pattaya. But I have my doubts about it. The most obvious being the work permit situation.
I can perhaps understand why the MIB would appreciate help from expats - native English speakers etc. Calming down situations with tourists which maybe look like getting out of hand. A quiet word in the ear about local laws and customs could help defuse things. Yes - that could be useful. But do it legally.
If the same thing happened here in the UK I would be up in arms and questioning the motives of our police force. Say my local force recruited Polish volunteers for example. I would be wondering why A) my poilice force couldn't recruit paid staff who could deal with the Polish community and B) what is motivating the Polish volunteers to work for nothing. In other words what are they getting out of it.
Transfer that scenario to Thailand and the motivation for expats to become so closely involved with the work of the MIB could be even greater and have potentially more benefits. To put it bluntly - is it just arse licking?

I was approached many moons ago when the tourist police first came to town (early 2000s) to help them with translating stuff to foreigners when incidents arrived.

When I bought up the work permit issue and possible benefits to me for doing a job for no pay I just got a sheepish smile. Then came the legality of it all where I was 'working' for one lower echelon police dept but could be 'arrested' by the immigration dept depending on who was higher up the chain or who how much clout (read money) the farang involved in the incident would have.

Not in a million years was the sensible answer to that conundrum.

The only farang I know who worked for the tourist police was a Norwegian woman.
She moved back to Norway last year and for her last two years of living here in town she had a work permit as a teacher in the the same building that houses one of our sponsors, The Learning Centre.
Don't know why she was asked to take the job for the tourist police but maybe because she had a Thai husband?
