Can a foreigner get a Thai ID card?

Post by buksida »

The number of places that have dual priced entrance fees is on the increase and in my experience fewer of them are accepting a work permit or drivers license as proof of residence status.

They all however state that you can get the Thai rate if you have a Thai ID card.

My question then - is it possible for a farang to get one? Does anyone have one and how did you get it?

I'd have thought you needed Thai nationality to have a Thai ID card, but I'll be very interested to hear if that's not the case.

I wonder of the Khaosan Road scribes would issue to a farang? They seem to issue anything else you may want. Pete

yup no problem there, though you may hit major problems with the police if you use it to get a discount and the haul in the police

quite happy with the driving and bike licences from there never been a problem

I read a recent article describing how just about everything could be obtained there except Thai ID.

It's a road in Bkk notorious for producing false documents.

As PC as the forum is these days I state the following disclaimer: The intent of the post was not to urge people to break the law, but to highlight the possible options available. If the law was an issue, I'm sure the Thai police would have taken care of it long ago.

Really, the bottom line answer is no concerning a Thai ID. Perhaps with a permanent residence card one can get the discounts. Vincent....are you about?

I had a Chinese business guest and his wife visit here last week. They wanted to see elephants so off we went to the nearest chang park. I told them not to speak and stand with my wife and daughter, and they got the Thai price....of course I didn't. Grin and bear it is all you can do. It's not worth the stress. Pete

Right, I'm well aware you can get fake everything at Khaosan road but my question was can a farang get a real ID card and if so, how.

The staff at these attractions must be ignorant of the fact that it is virtually impossible then. Now show me your money you dumb tourist!

I've never tried with my yellow book. That may be worth a shot as it's distinct from a drivers license or a work permit.

Off the top of my head, I'd say that a Thai ID card would suppose Thai nationality and as far as I'm aware, that isn't possible, even with PR (permanent residency).
Vincent may well be able to shed some light on the situation.
