Burger King coming to Market Village

Restaurants, food, beverage, hawkers, and local markets and suppliers. This is the place for discussion on Hua Hin's culinary options.

Back in 2002 there was a McDonalds in town, I think it was opposite the old Buffaloe Bills.
One Saturday, the US fleet were doing exercises with Thai navy and around 200 of the yank sailors were queued outside McD.
I asked a couple of the sailors, why they were eating burgers when there was so much great food to be had in Hua Hin?

They all said in unison, YUK!

No accounting for taste. :munch:

In my fairly unqualified opinion - since I don't believe my 11 week stint at McDonald's, as a student, counts - you cannot beat a BintaBurger. The lady who runs that cart is a genius. She knows just how to wrangle and worry the burger into a state of utter perfection that has to be tasted to be believed.

Now it's true that I haven't tried one while certifiably sober but I'm prepared to bet that even if she were serving burgers during that embarrassingly narrow window of opportunity, they would taste equally good.

One thing I found amazing during my short tenure at McDonald's is that a standard hamburger 1.6 oz / 45g) could be cooked from frozen to piping hot in just 47 seconds. The other thing I was impressed by was the design and layout of the 'kitchen'. Everything was made to fit or work together in perfect harmony, as though some sort of design guru (probably Danish, almost certainly Scandinavian) had spent countless hours observing and assessing the needs of the business and had seemingly hewn the required workspace from a single block of stainless steel, set to perfectly complement the needs of the staff.

That or the designer had spent two minutes there and decided to make sure everything could be operated by people whose idea of a good time was banging rocks together. I'm not sure which.

You seriously went up to a bunch of strangers and asked them that?

How did you know (before their answer, of course) that they'd not spent the last week enjoying nothing but the delights of Tom Yams, Curries and Som Tams, and on this particular day just really happened to fancy a burger?
They all said in unison, YUK!

I don't remember a McDonalds being down there.

I do remember Pizza Hut being close to where The Pizza Company is (and at one point they were next to each other).
I remember Burger King always being where it is.

Does anyone remember the first KFC (not quite in Hua Hin) - it was there in 1998 but gone in 2000 ?

I knew, because I had heard in the bar that night, that there would be an influx of US sailors that night in HH, as they had just been given shore leave. Call me old fashioned but I used simple logic to determine that if they had not been ashore before in Thailand, then they could not have spent the last week, sampling the culinary delights of Thailand.

I did not just walk up to them and ask the question, (the pavement and street was packed with them and I could hardly avoid them) so I got chatting to a few of them, while I was waiting for my wife to pick me up in the car.
As for them having sampled the delights of Thai food, they told me this was their first shore leave in LOS and Mac D was their first port of call. Confirming my earlier thoughts about them not having eaten Thai food.
Apparently, they had been warned before coming ashore, not to trust street food or street girls.
I tried to reassure them that both were safe, provided certain precautions were taken  but they were having none of either.

I, unlike you it seems, understand the meaning of YUK! when used in the context it was by the Americans.

I know, right. Why waste time, just jump straight to conclusions. The only problem is, invariably those conclusions will be wrong, when not supported by proof.

I'm well aware of what 'YUK' means. However in your previous introduction to the situation it appeared you'd just gone steaming in with your challenge on the assumption they'd never tried it. Obviously this would be before you'd even heard the word 'YUK'

The point you were making is they preferred burgers to Thai food. And I stand by my view that people have the right to eat whatever they prefer to eat (so long as they can afford it) and somebody over here who doesn't like Thai food would be crazy to force it down their throat unless they had to.

Back on topic, BK in Market Village appeared to be open when I was there yesterday.

In comparison I read in the news today that the burger outlets in my home country are being let go and replaced by sushi shops in the shopping malls.

Possibly burger joints and fast food have peaked as a the new online generation develops other consumer habbits? I would think that the 50ies teenager style from the US is long overdue for renewal?

Where was the challenge? where was the assumption in my post? How do you know where, in the long conversation I had with them, the word YUK was used? It's not obvious at all!
It appeared that way to you, because you had steamed in and had drawn the wrong conclusions from my original post.

Who are you implying does not like Thai food? Who is forcing Thai food down their throats? Where do I say, that they could not eat their choice of food?

Maybe you did not read what I posted, TRY AGAIN

They were warned by their own officers FFS!!! about the street food in Thailand, I did the exact opposite and reassured them that the food was safe. How you came to the incorrect conclusions, that I did not like Thai food and was trying to force it down their throats, is beyond me!
Giving someone reassuring advice, is not forcing them to eat Thai food. Only an idiot would think that!

You seemed to have drawn so many wrong conclusions from one line in my first post. The actual conversation with the Americans, lasted more than 10 minutes and was condensed for the post.

I have eaten many burgers from the lady in Bintabaht, way back in 2003 and very nice they were, much better than Mac D's. :D
As I said before, no accounting for taste.

You've made it almost much impossible to quote you there so well done.
Where was the challenge?
You saw them eating burgers and asked them why they didn't try Thai food.
where was the assumption in my post? How do you know where, in the long conversation I had with them, the word YUK was used? It's not obvious at all!
I can only go by the wording of your original post. In which you said that YOU asked them if they liked Thai food and THEY REPLIED 'Yuk''. Sorry for jumping to assumptions about what order this happened in but you really need to stick to standard English practices otherwise you'll cause no end of confusion.

So, they said 'YUK' first? That makes it a pretty bizzare story to be honest.
Where do I say, that they could not eat their choice of food?
"No accounting for taste" implies a lack of tolerance for these people's choices. Or, at best, an air of superiority that you yourself prefer Thai food.
Maybe you did not read what I posted, TRY AGAIN
That's because in your original story, you DIDN'T post it. You're original story was "I asked a bunch of sailors why they were having McDonalds instead of Thai food"/

How you came to the incorrect conclusions, that I did not like Thai food and was trying to force it down their throats, is beyond me!
Where did you come to the conclusion that you believed that I don't think you like Thai food. Why would you try and make others eat Thai food if you yourself don't like it. That would make about as much sense as saying 'YUK' before you've even been asked a question.
Giving someone reassuring advice, is not forcing them to eat Thai food.
No, but saying "They preferred burgers to Thai food - No accounting for taste" implies that you believe they are wrong to do so

Khundon, I think you have your timing wrong (or maybe this story came to you in a dream and you thought it was real :D ). Seriously, I think you mean Burger King, which was across a small side soi from where Buffalo Bills was located back in those days.

I first came here in 2003 and the location where McDonald's is now (which is across the street from where Buffalo Bills was then) was a dirt lot that contained an open air restaurant belonging to the Sirin Hotel next door. The empty part of the lot behind the restaurant was used for parking. I think the McDonalds, in fact that entire shopping complex was not constructed until at least 2005 and maybe as late as 2006 or 7.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

I'm pretty sure the McDonalds was there when I first came here in 2004.
