Puncture resistant/proof bicycle tyres

Post by Gregjam »

Can anyone advise on the local availability of or recommendations in regard to puncture proof/resistant bicycle tyres.
I have just returned to cycling after a long break to help increase my fitness and lose some weight so the tyres on my new mountain bike are subject to harsh treatment. Second ride and ten kilometres from home I got a puncture but fortunately a local motorcycle shop was close by and patched the tube saving me a lot of sweat. Speed is not critical to me and I just want to enjoy getting used to cycling again without regular punctures if possible.
I have not asked around local shops yet but suspect the one on Petkasem halfway to Cha Am May be the best bet. I bought the bike in Pranburi following recommendations on his forum and am very happy with it.
All comments welcome, even those with foreign spelling!

Some folk say they put 'slime'-sealant in their tyres, some say you can buy kevlar sleeves to line your tyre's inside with, I myself have a tape running round the inside of the tyre..it will not stop all the thorns , but it does help.
Mine was ordered from BKK, but if you ask Kaeg..the lady that runs HH-Bike just after the PTT garage on the right going north outa town..I'm sure she'll get you two.
Mine are good, but not cheap at about 600B each.
As a quick tip..if you're riding down trails and you see a kind of creeper growing across the trail beware..these have seeds that resemble a molecule..and have thorny spikes sticking out all around the seed..once the rains come they can be spotted by their small yellow flowers.
Also maybe think about changing your tyres..Geax brand do some kevlar ones that are good...

My experience here in Hua Hin is that despite being such a modern place we are really in the boonies when it comes to anything that is a modern accessory. The latest phone or TV is fine but 90 degree HDMI adapters are something only available in that far off planet Bangkok. I have read about the Slime inner tubes and Schwalbe Marathon tyres but will they be available here. If a shop will get them in that is great but all too often there is little interest in this. This explains why I am asking for local experience.
From what Usual Suspect says I will check out the shop mentioned and thanks for the info. I will update the thread on what the outcome of this was later.

...and Schwalbe Marathon tyres ...
Generally I've found Schwalbe tyres to be pretty puncture resistant anyway, even the ones cheaper than Marathons. Most of the time I just cycle with a spare tube, a small pump and a set of tyre levers and a puncture doesn't stop me for more than about five minutes.

About ten thousand km every year for the last 14 years with normal tyres and maybe 10 punctures in all... 5 minutes to repair or change the tube and riding again. I would not invest in very expensive tyres...
