Actually, I thought the icing on the cake was bringing Wright-Phillips on and playing him on the LEFT!!!
I agree completely, but I thought he should have come on for Lampard with Gerrard vacating the right side (which he had been doing all through the match anyway) and playing centrally. Carrick could have been replaced by Parker, even though the latter is not really a holding midfielder, but then again on that performance neither is the former - I don't actually recall many ball winning tackles except when he had lost the ball in the first place! To be fair, the Macedonians did play well and closed Carrick down very quickly, but that exposed his inability to beat a man and run with the ball - he can be a great passer but is very static. Although I don't think Downing is good enough, he did at least put a couple of decent crosses in, and we don't have too many options for that position, although we could try Wayne Bridge there until Joe Cole is fit. In fact Wright-Phillips did OK on the left but only by cutting inside, and if that happens throughout a match from both sides then the team loses penetration and plays too narrow, and also loses any 'Crouch advantage'. Rooney just doesn't look fit or in form at the moment and should be dropped for England until he regains both, and I think Andy Johnson should be in the reckoning but he isn't in the squad (injured?). The team I'd like to see against Croatia is:
-------------------------------Robinson------------------------------
Neville------------King/Ferdinand---Terry---------------------Cole
Wright-Phillips-------Parker--------Lampard----------------Bridge
---------------------Defoe----------Crouch---------------------------

However I'm pretty sure McClaren will pick the same side that played on Saturday, except with Wright-Phillips replacing the suspended Gerrard and maybe Ferdinand back in defence instead of King (if he is fit).

Anyone seen Sven?

(Croatia 1-0 after 65 mins, its crap) England with 5 defenders and an "alleged" defensive midfielder (Carrick) who seems, er, incapable of defending!

Hope the next 25 minutes dooesn't get any worse?

Hope (forlornely) that England start to resemble a football team?

Hope............

Robinson: "oops"! 2-0!!!

Anyone seen Becks? I thought we were building a young exciting team based on pace and flair - but they're all on the bench!!!

How do they expect a manager from a 2nd rate team, whose best achievement is to get to the final of the European Losers Cup, to lead our nation to victory in 2010?

I seem to remember his current set of loyal supporters screaming for his head earlier this season.

And just one more thing........................Mrs BB is now furious with me because I've made her watch Coronation Street in the conservatory. She says I'd have been better switching the footy off and watching Corrie with her.

I took the washing out, made my sandwiches for the morrow, posted on here, picked my toenails and bruised my knuckle when it collided with the door!

Its at times like this that I wish I had a cat, but thats another thread.........

Does anyone have any idea what McLaren (is that his name, I can't recall) was seeking to achieve with that team this evening, 'cepting what he did - ritual humiliation!

We should have put our under 21 side out.

Might have won something

The Under-21 side have indeed won something. They beat Germany (in Germany) by the same margin that the 'big boys' lost to Croatia and are now through to the finals. Both of Englands goals were scored by Theo Walcott, who never came on until the last ten minutes.

So maybe in four year's time we will have a decent team well on their way to becoming European Champions.

The Premiership and the real football resumes in a couple of days.
I must say that I'm glad that I will not have to watch another England performance until next year.
