One gets a telephone line connected, chooses a suitable server provider and Bob's your uncle.

That's the most instructive comment I've ever heard on this forum.

As said above, you need a phone line first, then get to your provider (TOT or TT&T) and buy one of their ADSL packages. Be aware though that you get what you pay for, the cheaper packages are slow and unreliable.

Can also be done via a bluetooth and mobile phone - slow, but it works.
I have been connected this way for nearly 2 years, so its not state of the art stuff - I think you can now get internet connection with just the bluetooth, but Ive no experience of this.

Has anybody experiences about using this in Hua Hin?

Ring or visit the TT&T office on the highway oposite the Cathoic School. Talk to Khun Pusit (he is boss and has great English) tell him you want an ADSL line to yoour house. Take copies of your ID and Lease etc, and thats it. He will send a team who will do the job in 30 minutes flat.

Maybe you picked up signals from a couple of your neighbours routers?
Free public wireless network in Hua Hin?

Yeah, Norseman, could be...not sure about this.

One network is named, G604_wireless (could be a neighbor-router), the other one is named Sunshine Wireless...
It's coming from the Sunshine Internet Shop (Thanawit Hotel) and offers to use pre-paid hours for wireless Internet-access.

A few people have mentioned to me that they can get online with the Sunshine wfi, wonder how good it is. Don't think its a good security practise though to have your network open like that.

I'm seeking another provider again since CAT has gone to the DOGS and is now useless. Any recommendations on one of the better ones? ie 2-3,000 per month, whats the bandwidth like and does it drop at certain times of the day?

Have already tried CAT, Maxnet and TOT ... not impressed.

It isn't necessarily that simple. I was looking to move from my present rented house, and found one I liked. However it didn't have a phone line. I went to the TT&T office and was told that they couldn't put a phone line in as they had run out of numbers!

New numbers

TT&T now have thousands of free numbers with the added digit you all got recently. Try asking someone else in the same office.

Hublet,
Are you sure about that? As far as I know the only numbers freed up have been mobile phone numbers, as they are the only ones that got the extra digit. I was told that I may have to wait as long as 6 months to get a number (this was a couple of months ago), and also that the house I wanted may not be able to have internet at all because of it's distance from the town.

Your right Wanderlust.
The new digits had nothing to do with your house phone.
Only cell phones got the 10 digits.
Home phone still have only 9 digits.
Therefore it must be some mistake that TT&T have thousands of free numbers.

It may not be the number, but the fact that they have not laid any line to the house/development. I know many who have bought new houses in new developments, both in Pattaya and Bangkok, and waited 9-12 months for service. You can get around this by walking into the phone office with a wad of cash and saying you'll pay for the entire line run from the spot where it has stopped, up to your house. Sometimes poles are involved as well. Of course, other home owners there will benefit as well. If they are straight up people, maybe they'll reimburse some of the cost.

I've never heard of the internet issue. If you have a working phone, you have dial up. Pete
