Marriage Visa

Post by Grunter »

Ok this has more than likely been asked before but either i have missed it or can not find the answer i am after hence the question.

I have recently been married to a Thai National & was about to apply for my "O" Non-immigrant Visa.
But as some may already know i work offshore & do the fly in & fly out working in Angola but living here.
I work rotational 28 days on & 28 days off typically, so my days are normally 28 days on the rig, 4 days in travel, 2 days either end, so i only spend 24 days in country at a time.

So when i do apply for the type "O" Visa (Marriage) is there a multi-entry/exit Visa type deal
As i have heard that if i leave Thailand & do not apply for a exit it will void my type "O" Visa.

I also thought you had to apply for 90 Visa first then apply for the marriage Visa in BKK.
Could someone give me a little run down on the process, as i say only recently got married within the last few weeks & have only now started to really look at the Visa side of things.
Also i am Australian if that makes nay other difference as well in this

Thanks in advance for advice on this subject

Once you have your annual extension based on marriage, you apply for a re-entry permit which comes in either single or multiple varieties - 1,000 and 3.800 THB respectively. I would imagine that the multiple one is what will suit you. Without that, you'll lose your permitted to stay stamp when you depart the country
To extend you'll need a non Imm O visa to start with. It is possible to upgrade here to that status from either a 30 day visa exempt stamp or a tourist visa but you'll be running around a lot and getting the O visa in the first place will make your life easier especially with the amount of time you spend here. What you will need to show to get the O visa will be dependent on where you apply. O visas can be either single or multi entry although the latter are becoming increasingly difficult to get.
You'll need to season money in a Thai bank before you apply for the extension. The amount is a minimum of 400k THB and it needs to have been in the bank for 3 months before application. If you've already got that amount seasoned, all's well and good. If not you need to get on with things next time you're here and because of the seasoning time you'll not be ably to apply for the extension right away. It's just a matter of timing.
You do have an alternative though and that to get a letter from your Embassy in BKK confirming that you have overseas income of minimum 40k THB a month.

When you go to Imm you'll need:
Passport
TM 7 form filled in
Marriage certificate
Confirmation from the Amphur office of marriage
Letter from Embassy regarding income or bank book and letter from bank confirming savings
A map showing where you live
Photos of the two of you around the house, one showing the house number
Your wife has to go with you and they will probably ask her a few questions
1,900 THB extension fee
Fee for re-entry permit

The process is that Imm will give you a 30 day "under consideration" stamp and send your papers to BKK for approval. You go back after the 30 days and hopefully Imm stamp you in for another 11 months. That's about it. It sounds complicated but if you just take each step at a time you should be OK but timing will be an issue.

If you were married and are living in HH, you need to apply here. All marriage extensions are then decided upon by BKK.

My apologies for jumping onto this thread and thanks to lomuamart for a very comprehensive answer. I am in a similar position to Grunter except I spend 3 months here and 3 months at work. Would I be able to renew if I returned to work over two months before the expiry date of the visa. Is the marriage (or 800k 'retirement) visa worth getting in my case. This is in particular reference to Hua Hin immigration as I know elsewhere the situation can be different.

It's always worth having a word with Imm but strictly speaking, you can apply for or re-extend within the last 30 days of your year's permitted to stay.
The advantage of the extension is that you're far less likely to be affected by visa changes such as are happening at the moment (back-to-back visa and border runs). As long as you've got the re-entry permit you'll be OK - as long as you can re-extend some way in advance.
The 30 day rule isn't peculiar to HH. It should be the same everywhere.

Thanks lomuamart, I will have to give it a try. Now time to get the funds in the bank for the requisite three months.

Thanks for the info so far
the 400K in the bank is not an issue at all. Have well over that for more than a couple of years now.
So i guess i just need to get all my paper work sorted then & get it all submitted ASAP

Cheers again for the replies thus far
