100% correct. The book "Culture Shock" should be mandatory and in every aircraft seat pocket on flights into LOS. It's also not a bad idea for us old timers to re-read every year or so, I do.

As far as livestock with no shirts, I think we may be seeing a decrease in them as the new 30 visa stamp rules gets into full swing. For those remaining, we can dart and tag for future reference to understand their migratory patterns. More than a fair share seem to call Pattaya home, you HH folks ain't seen nothing. Pete :(

Traval agents are to blame. Perhaps hotels should have a handout to give a brief outline of customs

Yeap, the farangs should cover up once they leave the beach IMO.

I don't care what they wear on the beach. After all, they're here to get a tan (which is fashionable in the West). So it makes sense that they'll wear the bare minimum.

But once you enter the town, cover up, please. I have no need to see your semi-nude, fried-like-bacon bodies.
It's a small world after all...

I haven’t seen much nudity about the streets at the moment, in fact those trendy rain capes that you buy in the market would be more suitable.

Proper Dress in HuaHin

Post by Jodley »

Good evening/morning/afternoon all, :D

A group of us are heading to Hua Hin in January. We are all coming from Canada and I/we definitely do not want to offend anyone. Can you please give us an idea of what is "proper" city attire, so we need to have our legs and feet covered? or tops only? Sorry total novice..

Thanks,
Jodley

Hi Jodley

The rules are very casual

Keep a top on when you are walking around in the town centre. Shorts, sandals etc... are all fine and are normal wear.

I think the main issue is bare nipples bouncing down the high street - be they male or female.

Of course on the beach is slightly differnt, although topless for the girls is still a no-no.

More conservative attire would be required if you are visiting temples, but thats a slightly differnt issue.

Stick to that, and you'll not offend anyone

Hope you all have a gret time.

I'd agree with winkie, but I'd reiterate that when you leave the beach, put your street clothes back on, don't just add a pair of shorts to your bikini or wrap a sarong round your waist.

At temples it's best to be covered quite a bit more. Spaghetti strap tops & shorts are not the best things to wear there. As a mark of respect, try to cover your shoulders & cleavage & wear something at least down to your knees. So a short sleeved t-shirt & trousers or cropped trousers would be OK. (I'm assuming you're a woman, as you can see!)

A little off the subject, shoes should not be worn inside anybody's house, in temple buildings or in certain shops or offices. If you see loads of shoes outside the door, take yours off too.

As a cultural aside (nothing to do with clothes) you know about the Thai taboos about heads & feet, don't you? And also, as a woman you're not allowed to touch or pass anything directly to a monk, should you be visiting temples.

Enjoy yourselves when you come. It's a great place! :thumb:

Spotted a dark guy in Suvanabhumi airport strutting in to the check-in dressed in shorts, sneakers, sunglasses, tote bag and his t-shirt slung over his shoulder... at two in the afternoon. Granted it's warmer than you may be used to, but it's not even the beach...

You do see that quite a bit.
What gets me is when you see them in Heathrow in January.
Boy Scouts being prepared perhaps.

I think you are right about getting something printed up but even the Big Bad H doesn't let on what is good and what is not.

Some time ago a man came down to the beach from the H and proceeded to drop all of his kit and go for a swim. Needless to say the MIB (not the MIW) were waiting for him once he came out of the water and had once again donned his clothes.

On another occassion a young lady was happily sunbathing topless for a couple of hours and when she finally decided she had had enough and got dressed she too was promptly got met by the MIB. She complained bitterly that she had been there for a long time and no one has said anything. What she didn't realise was that it is so embarrassing for the officials and any Thai within the vicinity that they simply wont approach you until you are dressed.

Someone call Greenpeace there are beached white whales on Hua Hin beach

The most embarrassing one I ever saw was a couple of years ago in Koh Samui. I'd gone there for a couple of days with my boyfriend. We're sitting there on Chaweng Noi & there's a French couple a little way down. Now they were an attractive young couple, and she was sunbathing topless. Her boyfriend/husband was nearby. She called over one of the beach vendors selling fruit & proceeded to have a long conversation with him, all the time leaning into his face. The poor guy didn't know where to look. You could see embarrassment radiating off of him. The woman's boyfriend was standing behind him making fun of his discomfort. Really cold... :guns: :cuss:

Big bad H are only interested in relieving clients of their money

Greenpeace OK but would they get past the gun boats to skin the beached whales

Better idea would be for us to gang up on them and try and refloat them hoping they get caught by the jellyfish and the rocks

Seriously though and back to thread, I'm surprised MIB do not issue a friendly warning with a Thai smile when they exit the beach not properly clothed

It is after all pure ignorance
