Drinking & Driving
When I normally go into town it's for a night out or a dinner at one of the restaurants. Who would drive if you're having a beer or two? No need for parking, but after some years here I see a lot of people especially during the weekends, which bring their car, drink, and drive home! Fools in my opinion!

Very true, and not only a danger to themselves, a danger to innocent people who might be in the wrong place at the wrong time.huahin4ever wrote:When I normally go into town it's for a night out or a dinner at one of the restaurants. Re: Car Parking in the Bintabaht area
I think the lack of parking in the city centre is why you see a lot of wealthy Thai youngsters drinking in areas like soi 51 where there is more space. (They don't seem to care too much about drink-driving laws!)
Re: Car Parking in the Bintabaht area
Well, I'll get a lot of flack for this but I've been drinking and driving since I was sixteen years old and never had an accident except when I was sober. I think I drive better after a few because I'm more carefull and pay more attention to the road. Mind you, I don't get sloshed.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

And of course you are much more alert, your senses fine tuned and your reactions much much quicker when you've had a few-------NOT.
You'll not convince anybody with a brain that you're a safer driver when you're pi**ed. An accident just waiting to happen.

I don't believe that there is a single poster on this forum that has not, at least once, in their life driven a vehicle whilst technically drunk. Most of us grow out of this quite quickly and early in life. It really is like playing Russian Roulette .... One day the luck will run out, maybe for you or worse for a totally innocent person, who is in the wrong place at the wrong time and .....
The cost of a taxi, tuk tuk or whatever in a Thailand is small, enjoy your evening, enjoy some drinks and then enjoy somebody driving you home at low cost.

Have to say I was a tearaway as a teenager and in my early 20's and drove and drank and got away with it and fortunately never injured anyone. One reason I do not drive in Thailand is behaviour on the roads/sidewalks and anywhere else for that matter is very unpredictable. In my time here I've lost a few friends due to road accidents and visited many in hospital suffering from injuries as a result of battles on the road. 'More careful, paying more attention' when under the influence is pure bullshit and you know it.
Regardless of the time of day surely it is so much more comforting to get a tuk tuk or a taxi for some vittles. Even on your meagre $4000 a month I would think you can afford it.
Think of others too. Your wife and innocent bystanders are at risk when you're loaded behind the wheel. You don't have to be sloshed to impair your judgement

I can honestly say that there is at least one - me. I have never driven a vehicle whilst being under the influence of alcohol.Bristolian wrote:I don't believe that there is a single poster on this forum that has not, at least once, in their life driven a vehicle whilst technically drunk. Can't say I have never done it but you need to play this at loud volume if you really have to do it

I've never driven while technically drunk. That's easy to do if one drinks but doesn't need to drink. Also easy to do because by the time I owned a car, 1 friend, 1 teammate and 2 kids who'd been in the same schools for many years died in alcohol related crashes.Bristolian wrote:I don't believe that there is a single poster on this forum that has not, at least once, in their life driven a vehicle whilst technically drunk.
Re: Car Parking in the Bintabaht area
So most of you have never gone out for dinner, had a couple of glasses of wine or beers with your meal and then proceeded to drive home. That's what I'm talking about. I said I didn't drive sloshed (and I said I would get a lot of flack!). I did it all my life at dinner or out for a couple in the evenings when I was younger, and still do it frequently at lunch or dinner. I rarely have a decent meal without an alcoholic beverage or three to go with the meal, so if I was to bar myself from drinking and driving, I might as well sell my car.
All the friends and aquaintences I go to lunch or dinner with here do it as well (including quite a few forum members and at least one who has posted on this thread). In fact, I've stopped two friends from driving/riding after we went for drinks because I perceived them to be drunk or impaired. You will never see me visibly or audibly impaired outside my home. That's the only place I get sloshed (for many reasons other than and including driving).
And when I used to play golf (even with a large society group) nearly everyone had multiple beers after the game and then proceeded to drive home. So I suggest that 90% of you have done and still do it. Some who posted here don't of course because they don't even own personal transport so they always walk or take public transport. It's easy not to drink and drive if you don't own anything to drive!

Now

Honestly, no.hhfarang wrote:So most of you have never gone out for dinner, had a couple of glasses of wine or beers with your meal and then proceeded to drive home.
Because of my size, getting a driving in the first instance was very difficult. An examiner stated I was too fat to drive (he'd have probably been taken to court these days). After appeals, and hitting the curb on my next test, I eventually passed.
After such a job getting my licence, I vowed that I would never jeopardise it by succumbing to alcohol.

Yes but sometimes 2 or 3 drinks becomes 4 or 5 and that's when it becomes Russian Roulettehhfarang wrote:So most of you have never gone out for dinner, had a couple of glasses of wine or beers with your meal and then proceeded to drive home.
