Changing old $100 US notes

Post by migrant »

I understand that Thailand has no problems with the new US $100 dollar bills with the blue stripe, but what about the old style? Has anyone had any experience, or problems, getting banks or vendors to accept the old style?

Thanks!

They're not consistent, any of them, with what they'll accept. Depends upon the clerk on a given day IMO. Don't risk it and just bring the new notes, and bring them just for emergency, and use your ATM card to get Baht spending money after your initial exchange at the airport on arrival. Pete

PS: Forgot......even the new notes, don't crease, fold or in anyway wrinkle them or they may reject those as well. They want notes that look like fresh off the printing press.

Thanks Pete! I'm always hesitant to rely only on the atm card, between cloning, etc.

Well, I gave you the worst case scenarios and you could have better luck in all categories. Concerning ATM, try to use the machines outside of the banks who own the machines, either street branches or in the mall branches. They're generally safer IMO. Pete

Correct me if I am wrong but I have always avoided the exchange booths at the airport as their rates are not as good as you will get anywhere else apart from hotels and bars etc, and it pays to shop around. The newer the bills the better and forget 1996 issue or earlier as they will be refused everywhere even in the banks in my experience. Not sure about 2002 onwards but they definitely like newer bills as mentioned.

Totally agree about ATM's. Those outside banks or in shopping malls like Market Village are best.
