Plenty of people to help with filling in forms, etc. You have to pay 900 Baht for the bus transport from the Thai border to the Myanmar border (about 2 km up the mountain) but you don't need to get out of the bus at Myanmar, everything arranged by the driver. The only queue when arriving back at Thai immigration are the people on your bus (usually 3 or 4). Very efficient operation. I was back in Hua Hin early Saturday afternoon.
:agree: very easy and would only use Ranong if procedure change or I heading south for another reason.

It's ages since I've done it but the blue buses to Phuket go through Ranong. Not the most comfortable way to get there and it takes about 6 hours. You'll need to check departure times and dependent on those will determine whether you can make the border on the same day.
I've also broken the journey in Chumphon, stayed a night and got a minibus the next day. The Chumphon Palace Hotel was an inexpensive and comfortable place in the centre of town.
In Ranong, I stayed at the Asia Hotel, again centre of town and just about passable. You'll probably find something a bit better.
Never stayed overnight on the Burmese side but there are a couple of hotels there. Don't know if there's much to do there after dark.

IF you're gonna do the visa-run down there by using a bus then I've an option for you...
..every night at around 10.00pm 2 'Transport Co.' buses leave HH bound for Ranong.
One bus is the 1st class jaloppy, the other is the 24 seat VIP.
(I always used the VIP bus due the the drivers always being older & more responsible..never drove like twats).
OK, so you've ordered your ticket 2 days in advance, got on the bus, got down there, but it's only 6.00am in the morning!
Not to worry, I used to use a taxi driver that would come and pick me up from the bus station, deliver me to the quayside & help me at the immigration post, then have a boat waiting for me.
(His number I can get for you).
You would be at the Burmese side as their office opened & back for about 9.15/9.30.
Now at this point I've used the 10.30 2nd class bus from the bus station back to HH.
IF you indeed fancied staying in Ranong this taxi driver could take you to the Thansila Hotel near the hot springs..leaving all day to chill up there (10 mins walk from hotel), near the hotel each night is a 'Korean style BBQ' for 69B..plus basic american breaky is only 100B at the hotel.
A few years ago, BOTH daytime Bangkok-bound 1st class buses left Ranong's 1st class bus station at 8.30am..these buses bypass HH, but the driver WILL drop you off just thru' the traffic lights in the middle of Pranburi right next to the HH bus ticket office..whereupon you can get a bus to HH every 30 mins or so.
Hope this was some help...if you check the 'On the road' section on here, on about page 3 you'll see my report & Buksi's write-up on Ranong titled 'A short stay in Ranong'..

across from the train station in HH (on the other side of the traffic circle) is a "visa run" business. You can't miss it.

I used them in June, cost was 2500 baht total. Trip was 13 hours total. Five hours down, five hours back and the rest on the ferry and at immigration.

The people from the office took care of everything.

I am not sure if they are still in bussiness, but I did see the sign there yesterday.

The van was nice and I got a good group of fellow travelers.
I really like this forum because there are no personal attacks. All the members contribute in a positive way to my posts.

I don't know what the hating is on Ranong. It's not much further south than the distance to Kanchan. surely?

This is how I did it back in the day!

As previously stated there are no more "visa runs" immigration has cracked down on this shortcut to extending visa's, there have been plenty of posts about this here and on other forums I think.

There still are if you have a visa, not the 'show up and get a stamp on arrival' VOA stuff. :)
