The difference between Christmas and the New Year is that Christmas is a farang holiday and any festivities are for us foreigners. The New Year is a multi-cultural celebration and is therefore much bigger and 'in your face'. I've lived here for many years and the best place to be at midnight is on the beach. Throughout the evening, you can eat, drink and be merry, while setting off your own fireworks or watching the fireworks displayed all along the Hua Hin Bay with the crescendo at midnight. Hundreds of 'bon fais' landing god knows where.

Thoroughly recommend a place on the beach. At Keaw Takieb you get a perfect view of the whole beach.

My good friend Eddy is down in HH on the 1st. He basically works for charity especially the poor kids in Thailand. Guaranteed enjoyment for both adults and kids as he is a well know clown

Here is his link if you and your family are interested

I know it looks like I'm promoting his business but he does this for charity and earns no more than his food and keep for making people happy.

I haven`t seen any comments about Hua Hin crowds, but here in Bangkok it is the original Gost Town! I had to go out this morning and there are rows of shops closed that I did not believe even had a closable door. The expressway that I can see from my Condo has an odd car or truck about every 5 minures, as does Sukumvit Rd and Rama 4. I think it is even more deserted than at Songkhran.

I think all of the Bangkokians have come here. I've just been for a walk on the beach South of Khao Takiab - took about 45 minutes to drive there, and I'd guess 90% of number plates were from Bangkok.

From what I've gleaned many seasoned expats are joining local 'street parties' with a view to considering venturing further afield later but are all concerned about the traffic and congestion situation. 5 years ago it was not a big problem but now that HH is such a sprawling chaotic mess it's a big factor in terms of venturing out unless you enjoy that sort of thing.

I ventured down to the condo shop lunchtime to find that NY has kicked off already. Outside the shop a barbeque has been on the go since 11am. All welcome and it seems that it is free providing you buy your drinks in the shop. Quite a few of the resident girls are manning the food chain. Seems most have wised up to the idea of venturing into Hua Hin town (large car-park) tonight so they are happy to leave that to the BK Thais and crowd loving folk.

No doubt it will mean many will stroll down to the beach or up onto the roof at midnight to enjoy the fireworks

Richard, or anybody who knows, there's a big floating platform/barge like vessel a bit further South from you, closer to the Intercon, is that a platform for a firework display ?

We went for a meal at Supatra by the Sea,which was excellent . Then went on the beach and watched the fireworks all along the coast. Not a GayGordon in sight but a great night. Thanks for all the suggestions.
