TV series worth watching/downloading

Babylon Season 1, on Channel 4

A satiric, black comedy look at the difficulties of running a police force, and a fish out of water journey for a corporate communications expert brought in by politicians to help man running the force (who wants little or nothing to do with her), and stories of the constables (bobbies? cops? officers? - what the bleep are English police called?) part of the story.

It's different. The drama is constantly interrupted and undermined by the satire and black comedy. Pilot & episode 1 convince me want to keep watching. That and the creative and funny put downs, talking back, snark, parting jabs, threats, etc. that may be routine British fare but it was fresh to me. The show just concluded a six episode + pilot season 1.

For those with an interest in nature, David Attenborough's 'Life Story' is yet another amazing addition to his portfolio of such brilliance.

We just started watching Gracepoint which is the US version of Broadchurch. Still starring David Tennant doing a credible California accent. Just watched the first episode, so far, but we'll continue. Plot essentially identical to Broadchurch, so far.

Justified just started the last season, good series

Another TV series in the 'some left - most stayed' genre is "Les Revenants" (The Returned), from France in 2012. Damn good, otherwise I wouldn't have put up with reading subtitles. People who died about 10 years ago wake up one day on the outskirts of town. They haven't aged. They don't know they died. They walk back into town, looking for their friends and family. First there is one returned, then another, then another ...

It's not a horror film. Not at first. It's realistic reactions and coping of people dealing with the supernatural - both by the returned and those dealing with the returned. How would you react if you answered the front door and it's your long dead daughter? How would you react if you're the one who knocks, and your father opens the door, having aged 10 years in a day, staring at you in uncomprehending shock?

Les Revenants is being remade by A&E, the US cable tv network known for reality shows and a few formulaic dramas with a small twist. A&E says The Returned will share the same starting point but then diverge. A&E will have the same characters, played by similar looking actors but "the character work will be significantly different". Maybe that's why the US actors are are younger and better looking than their French counterparts.

I'd have to lose a bet to watch a single episode.

I downloaded all 7seasons of Star Trek Voyager a while back. I've just got to the stage in season 3 when 7 of 9 joins the crew.
Resistance is... erm... unlikely.

OMG, Harry Bosch is on TV. Michael Connelly’s Bosch novels are a substantal cut above the standard police procedural. Harry's thoughts and inner conflicts are integral to the story. Don't know how it will translate into another medium. But I'm downloading it as we speak.

The Bosch pilot, described above, aired in Feb 2014. Soon after, Amazon ordered a 10 episode first season. They hit the net 3 days ago.

Mmm, thanks for this heads up. Just watched the first episode and it looks promising and quite close to the novels. I see Connelly is an executive producer, so he presumably had a fair amount of input to the show.
