Sport or not

Post by arcadianagain »

Being a fully paid-up member of the Old Gits Club I think there are certain pastimes masquerading as sport, eg
Surfing, a healthy way of life no doubt and a great hobby, but not a sport
Beach volleyball, a made up "sport" now in the Olympics ffs, very nice costumes but a beach game, not a sport.
Rythmic gymnastics, just prancing about for those who don`t make the real gymnastics grade.
That thing that ladies do in the pool with pegs on their noses.

Well, I've heard certain stories from Pattaya and Phuket, but hadn't realised it was classed as a sport as such - more as a paid competition between friends?? :duck:

In all seriousness, there's an awful lot that I really wouldn't qualify as a sport, but that's just my opinion and I'm sure those who participate would strongly disagree...

Some great skill involved in surfing for example - not for me, but.... You also mention "Beach Volleyball" - I'll agree with the costumes!! Then again, you have "5 aside Wendyball - on the Beach"..... I'll have to reluctantly say there's some incredible skill displayed there at times (from some star past and present players).

Rugby 7's is a part of the next Olympics and many "rugby purists" are totally against it's inclusion. I for one enjoy the game, it's a far shorter and action packed version of rugby union and I firmly believe on the Olympic stage will introduce the game of rugby to far more people, who in turn I hope will start to follow the 15 a-side version!! :thumb:

I guess what I'm saying, it's each to their own and if the "sport" is internationally popular, it's always going to have the support whether we like it or not.

^ There's a lot of things that have been in the Olympics for a long time that are a stretch to be called a sport imho... curling comes immediately to mind. How can sliding a stone on ice while someone sweeps the route be called a sport... it's just a form of shuffle-board on ice!
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

Calling snooker and darts 'sports' is a joke as well. Great games to play, but hardly a sport.
