So, at around 1am, I want some more beer.
Stroll up the road to a newly opened Thai "rock" place.
"Hey can I have 3 large Changs to take away?" I'm taken into the big aircon place and I'm saying in my worst Thai "No, just beers to take away".
YES - for 500 Baht.
Ai rai? Walked over the road and got them much, much cheaper.
And they called me kee neow on the way out.
There was only one loser there.

They're a Thai place & they charge 500 bt for 3 lg Changs? Even if that's "consumption on the premises" prices that's really steep! Another "Farang pricing statement", can't see any Thai paying that.

As you did, Lomu, vote with your feet. It's the only way... :|

I know this is kinda of topic but one place that can be named but not shamed is Mr. Burger opposite Hin Nam. That place is great 50baht for a burger and chips. I'm used to paying 200 baht in BKK for crappy Burgerking, if you have not tried Mr. Burger then go try it they are great.

if you have not tried Mr. Burger then give him a go
Appreciate the kind words Craig

My biggest trip off recently (should have known better), went to the cesspit that is Patpong a few weeks back with a friend and ended up in one of the upstairs 'show' bars.
Advertised downstairs as 'no cover charge for show' etc etc. Got bill and it was 700 Baht for a Heineken and a Malibu, 300 and 400 Baht respectively.
Questioned it and answer was, yes sir no 'cover charge' for show, but surcharge on drinks for show.
Love it, had to laugh at my naivety, and their ingenuity.

They'll never stop getting the better of us, never.

I am not sure what this place is but the inference is that it is a retaurant.

So a couple of points. Whereas nobody likes to turn down business, a restaurant does not really want to have people coming in and out taking carrier bags full of drink with them. They often only sell the beer as a customer service for little profit (around Hua Hin and other parts of Thailand I mean). One compromise is to sell the beer but at menu prices which are usually about 25% - 50% above 7/11 price but could be a lot more depending upon the class of establishment.

However 500 baht for three bottles is way over the top. I believe but am not 100% sure that the wholesale price of large Chang is 33. baht. 500 baht for three makes this a mark up of over 400%.

That is ludicrous and this place should be avoided at all cost.

Another factor that I am not sure about, as I do not buy beer from retailers, is the licensing hours issue. If you required the purchase after hours they may have been sticking on risk premium.

200 for Burger King is poor value IMO.
I don't have any vested interest but a really good burger can be had at Great American Ribs across from BK and upstairs. Very pleasant, nice tattooed waitress, and an excellent big juicy burger with crispy curly fries for about 200.
My only complaint is they tack on tax and service charge but still far, far superior to BK.

Comes back to my favourite latin phrase....'caveat emptor' - let the buyer beware. Always find this an important reminder when travelling.

Too right it is. The unbelievable thing is that is was sold of by Diageo a few years ago to KFC because it was losing money.
