Looking for mutton

Hi all

Does anyone know where to buy mutton or lamb in HH? I know I can get it from the expat owned places but the prices are really a bit over the top.

You just need to compare minced pork prices between the price Thais pay and the prices charged by two expat suppliers to see what I mean and I have been eating pork bought from the markets for years without any trouble.

Would love some nice mutton though but not will to pay silly prices.

Thanks Chelsea for that. I think Takiap want to make a stew ar grill some cutlets and eat them with Rosemary (the herb, not some sheila froma sleazy disco in Perth), redcurrant sauce or mint sauce.

Anyway I have asking this question for three years and basically the answer is YES. And I mean local at local price not frozen imported Kiwi legs and cutlets which can be obtained at competetive prices at Hua Hin Ham and Bacon.

There are sheep in Thailand. I have seen a whole flock of them near a temple somewhere between Petchakasem and the Bypass. I have also seen them on Kanchanaburi and Isan.

There is a butcher (Muslim) operating out of Pran Buri. He has an agent who is a rather large Muslim gentleman who rides and old M/C and side car and he delivers to Indian retaurants and Islamic customer in the Hua Hin area. I have seen him around a few times but never been quick enough to grab him.

I had a friend called Nino years ago who had an Italian restaurant where the Hua Hin Property Shop is now. I have been told that he still has another smaller restaurant up by the airport but I have not been able to find it yet and I can not get in touch with him. He knows the agent and the butcher.

Additionally there is a Muslim village just West of the Klong road about 4 KM North of Hua Hin. They produce milk mainly from goats which they use to make yoghurt and Paneer (moist cheese) but I have been told that they slaughter a few sheep as well.

Here it seems you just tell them what age of animal you want and they will provide what you want.

In the end I gave up the search because I got to busy.

I am sure that on day with the pointers I have provided you will be able to nail down the supplier and butcher.

One other source of information is the large Indian lady who speaks about five languages including Thai and English and owns the Taj Mahal restaurant by the Chinese Temple. If you can catch she is more than happy to chat for hours about cooking and ingredients. I have learnt much from her.

I hope someone can get an answer to this.

Oops, sorry Guess, I cocked that right up. What I was trying to say was that in October I saw about six sheep grazing alongside the north end of the canal road, at first I thought they were goats, but they were definitely dirty looking sheep of the welsh variety.

I've 48 legs of mutton,lamb and hogget if you want 'em.
Really fresh, so fresh all you have to do is catch the buggers and they are all yours.
They are roaming my orchard at present and eyeing off my tropical peaches.If my neighbour doesn't come and take 'em back where they belong , then it's going to be "ga yung", big time.... real soon .

Oh, problem... you have to make it across here to Perth tho.
Gladly give you a hand loading them up.

Thanks for the replies eveyone.

In response to the first reply - yes I have seen sheep in Thailand, in Hua-Hin actually. There was a whole flock of them grazing on the back road which I travel to come through to BoFai, just past the set of trafic lights.

Anyway, I'll try and get hold of Nino or ask about between the locals.
