I did the trip in April and it took me 7 hours but I was in no rush.
Mini bus from Hua Hin to Victory Monument 180 Baht.
Sky train to Ekamai 40 Baht.
Air con bus from bus station to Pattaya 117 Baht.
Hows that for value?
We just did the trip yesterday in a rented car. left HH at 2pm and arrived at my condo in Jomtein/Pattaya at 7 pm last night. Stopped once for gas and a little P break.
easy trip

I did the same in March this year, but more direct.
A/c to BKK southern bus station, 120 Baht (approx)
A/c BKK Southern bus station to Pattaya 117 baht.
Left Hua Hin 130pm arr Pattaya 830pm.
I do this trip once a week, average time about 6.5 - 7.5 hours. Never ever do this trip on a Friday, one time I had no choice, I left at 1.00pm spent 3 hours getting through Bangkok, and a very slow (raining) 4.5 hour onward drive to Pattaya. 10 hours all together.
I've taken a minibus direct and it wa s much faster than the above posts.about 5 hours
I was also driven there byafrend who drives really fast and wewere there in less than 4 hours.
Today I think I would take the VIPbus to Swampy and then a bus to Patt from there, that would be 3hrs + 2hrs +conection time
Yesbb,I heard that recently. By the way if you ask when you are buying tickets how long it wil ltake, they give a pessimistic answer. Guess this prevents people from complaining. For instance I have taken the bus to swampy many times and it has taken anything fron 2h 55m to 3h 25m but they tell you 4-5 hours.

Assuming the timing is ok, that's the way I would go JG, direct journey and whilst not as quick as the minibus, more comfortable and almost certainly a safer journey.
When I went by minibus they stopped to refuel twice, luckily it was only a 10 min stop each time, but I have known a refuel stop to take 30+ minutes. I doubt that the bus stops to refuel

Since the Bell Travel Service non-stop bus between Hua Hin and Pattaya started in December 2015, I've taken it for seven round-trips. The fastest in either direction was 4:45. I'd say average time was 5:00 each way. Are we talking about the same bus service??? (Your timings sound more like the bus between Hua Hin and Suvarnabhumi airport.)
PS: The longest was a Hua Hin to Pattaya segment that took 6:30. But... we were in an accident on a Bangkok Freeway and waited at the side of the road for 40 minutes for a replacement bus.
