A big bush fire was brought under control on Friday after destroying about 1,000 rai of a forest in the Kaeng Krachan National Park.
The fire had been spotted on the Tanao Sri mountain range a few kilometres from the Thai-Myanmar border on Thursday. Rangers and forest firefighters tried to reach the site but strong winds forced them to withdraw.
The firefighters, together with soldiers and volunteer hill people, renewed the effort on Friday morning.
Thasanet Phetkhong, assistant chief of the Kaeng Krachan National Park who joined the group, reported later they had managed to contain the fire.
Theerachart Piapradit, a local forest firefighter chief, said the fire had eased thanks to high humidity Thursday night.
Firefighters spent hours carrying water and equipment to make 30-kilometre-long firebreaks to contain the blaze and protect a water catchment area near the Pa La-u waterfall.
Firefighters saw traces of poachers who were believed to have set fire in the forest to facilitate their hunts.
The practice is common despite warnings and it took four days to put out the previous fire.
