importing a tv into Thailand

Post by Rob W »

Perhaps some one will know so I will ask.
Im based for now in Singapore and am looking to buy a LCD TV while im here and thought that when this job is over I could take it to the house in HH. Do you think I would get collared for duty if I can prove I have owned it for 1 year for instance. Or just forget it and buy another in HH.
looking at a 32"tosh hd etc on special this weekend for $ 1199.
any thoughts?

Forget it! Buy one when in HH! TVs are not good for travel and there is different electrical stuff involved.

Yes, they will kill you. I did exactly the same thing in 1993 with not just a TV, but crates of household goods. I don't remember the exact bill but would have been similar cost if I left about all of it in Singapore and bought all new up here. They even charged me outbound to HK in early 1996 for the same goods. THEN, back into Thailand again in late 1996.

I now have some of the most expensive household goods known to man...LOL. I may have them all bronzed when I pass away and present them to the government.

I thing they would charge you at least half of your purchase price of $1199 as duty, perhaps 75%. Pete

TVs are assembled in Thailand so the gov't naturally will want to protect this via taxes and tariffs.
Easily messed up in transit as jockey said and a S'pore guarantee may be worthless in Thailand.

JohnnyK made a point that could save your plan. Check if the TV is "Made in Thailand". If so, they cannot and will not charge you duty. This also happened to me with some shirts I bought mail order. When I showed the the Thailand tag, they gave them to me and off I went, no duty. Pete
