Some people need to get a life. If that is the worst thing they can find to campaign for & complain about, then life in Australia must be very good for them. Oh, and I'm a "Pom". :P

anyone for cricket

Post by rosievictoria »

Hi Dawn & Nereus
Correct me if I am wrong but I always thought the name Pom was given to the English by the French.
Because the English people have such fine white perfect skin that when they got cold two little red circles like apples appeared on their cheeks hence the name "Pomme" or Pom.
Almost all of us in Australia have English or Scottish ancestors so I hardly think we would be insulting them if Pom was a bad word.
So are we now not to be called Aussies,New Zealanders Kiwi's etc etc.
I know what I would like to call Dave Thomason.
Guess it takes all sorts to make a world
Cheers

Having worked with many Australians, I’m left wondering why they would have any reason to feel superior to anybody else!

Steve G & Chelsea
What do you mean Australians think they are better than English?
You have strayed away from the original thread of this forum.

Hi rosevictoria, no offence intended, I was just having a dig back; the original post quoted an article about Australians referring to Brits in a derogatory manner.

Rosievictoria,

Maybe my point didn't come across. I actually meant that these guys must have a really good life if that's the biggest complaint they have! It's like me getting upset about being called "farang" here or "gweilo" (which actually is quite derogatory!) when I lived in Hong Kong. I've always had bigger problems in my life than what the natives of whichever country I'm living in choose to call me.
These guys seem to be living up to the "whingeing" part of their nickname. Surely, the best way to get rid of a nickname is to prove it wrong, not right!!!

Rosievictoria, ozuncle, you have just added fuel to my 25 year argument that the Aussies are a well balanced race. They have a chip on both shoulders.
Can give it out big time. but cannot take some well balanced humor when it is given back.

Rosie Victoria:
I always thought that the name POM was an anacronym of 'Prisoners Of Her Majesty". It was used by the native Australians to refer to the criminals who were shipped to your fair land.
I maybe wrong - I have been in the past...

You are so right- Pom stands for Prisioner of Mother England.
Who became the !st generation Australians.
My Great Grandparents on both sides came from England.
I can remember when we were researching our Family history and there was great excitement if you found an ancestor that had come over on a convict ship.
Could I suggest that if anyone has the time they go to

As you can see from .the above I only have my learner plates when it comes to putting down a web site.
The address should not all be underlined and when you come to-
over reaction to use of pom
there is a dropped dash between each of there words
Sorry
