Man faces jail for insulting Thai king
A Swiss man is facing up to 75 years in a Thai jail for insulting the country's king whilst on a drinking binge, officials have said.
Oliver Rudolf Jufer, 57, is due to go on trial in Chiang Mai next month for defacing images of King Bhumibol Adulyadej with black paint on the revered monarch's birthday.
Police are seeking consecutive jail terms for Jufer for five separate acts of lese majeste, carrying jail terms of between three and 15 years.
King Bhumibol is immensely popular in Thailand and is revered as a semi-divine figure by many Thais.
"This is a delicate issue and we don't want the public to know much about it," Chiang Mai chief prosecutor Manoon Moongpanchon said.
Jufer has been in jail since he was arrested in December.
Only one Thai newspaper reported the episode after police asked local journalists not to write about it to minimise the disrespect to King Bhumibol, the world's longest-reigning monarch.

Lock him up and throw away the key!
If the man has no respect for the king of a country where he is a guest he has no respect for the kings people also, if he has done the crime he should do the time no ifs or buts about it
being drunk is no excuse

I don't think he deserves 15 years but two should suffice to straighten his dumb head up.
The guy did five separate defacings!?
Typical example of people who come to countries knowing nothing and make no effort to find out anything about them. He probably still hasn't figured it out yet.
No sympathy for this prat but he'll have time to dry out at the least.
BTW, treason has nothing to do with it. Treason is aiding an enemy to defeat or conquer your own country, putting your country in mortal danger.

Back to the old adage
Get wised up before treading on foreign soil
On my horse again about airlines, hotels and travel agencies informing people of the customs of the countries you are visiting
Whether you are a Swiss Gnome or a hankerchief pleb from Margate, you should always be aware of local customs and respect them
I do not agree he should be locked up for his ignorance. Deport him and blacklist him from ever coming back to the Kingdom that I respect so much. Makes us all ashamed to be Farang
His behaviour can only be attributed to him being Piss*d, ignorant and mentally disturbed. Take him back to the Alps but make sure he pays!!!!!!

It’s none of my business what people say and think of me. I am what I am and do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. It makes life so much easier.

I'd go along with that, JW.JW wrote:Interesting to see what happens here, i bet the political spin doctors are trying to work out the best action. (Maybe that is just wishfull thinking!)
It's a tricky situation. Hopefully the offender will be declared insane, deported and none of us will have to worry about this again.
If the guy was younger I would say he deserved anything that they chose to throw at him, but at 57 I am tempted to think he has somehow lost the plot and probably requires a bit of medical attention. It would be better for everybody if they sat him in front of a shrink for a while and then deported him if they stll think he is a threat.
Incidentally you can't be hung for anything in the UK anymore, as not having a death penalty is a condition for membership of the EU. I seem to remember that prior to that, there was technically a death penalty for high treason and arson in Naval dockyards. For a long time a set of gallows was kept in working condition at Wandsworth for this reason, and apparently it's only a rumour that Albert Pierpointe, Britains last official executioner, had a sign in his pub saying "No hanging around the bar".

I Agree with the Statement of Dr. Dave
People just come to Thailand as it was cheap on the Brochure of the Travel Agent. I hope this guy gets a fair share of punishment and after 8 years @ The "Bangkok Hilton" then he will know to not mess with something sacret to Thais.
