70's concert experience..

Being a big music fan who grew up in the 70's it was with great excitement that I went to see Eric Clapton last week as he has always been one of my blues heroes.... Having paid $100 US per ticket for me and my better half I was expecting to be near the action...sadly we needed a telescope to see anything and the two big screens povided for the 12,000 people who were there were woefully inadequate......it left a bitter taste in my mouth ..all that money to watch a tv screen...in the 70's..i was lucky enough to see Led Zeppelin..the Stones.....Status Quo...Ziggy Stardust...Rod Stewart....Santana..Elton John... Rod Stewart......all for about 3 pounds a ticket in a theatre that held 2,500....yes 2,500 people only... I could see the sweat running down their faces I was so close......Yes i know we have moved on since those days but this stadium rock lacks any pesonal involvement with the audience..and you can't get close to the stage now cause the promoter takes all those tickets...the problem i have now is...Pink Floyd in the guise of roger waters is here this Thursday..playin the full version of Dark side of the moon...do i bite my hand and go cause it is one of our classics....or do I stick to my principles and give it a miss cause I'll be two miles from the stage.? ( I fully understand that anyone under the age of 40 will have no Idea what i'm talking about )...Any constructive comments would be welcome...

Big Jimmy - I think you should bite the bullet and go - what else will you be doing? Is it really this Thursday? I thought the concert was last week? I remember someone raving about it on this web site. If its still on I might go myself!

So you like sounds of the seventies? I love all the bands / music you quoted and love floyd. Here was my favorites from the 70's!...

Roger Waters is coming to Bangkok? Are you serious? Where? If it's the Impact Arena then Roger's got problems. The acoustics are truly dreadful - it's an aircraft hanger built of steel and concrete and even Roger Waters wouldn't be able to do a good job there.
If only we didn't have to work for a living, we'd both be down there like a shot.
Hope it's as good as it should be (albeit without the rest of the crew).

Firstly I'm under 40 and I know exactly what you're talking about (see my signature). Secondly, Kiwi P mentioned he'd seen the Floyd concert in another thread recently (stray dogs? heartworm in dogs?) and said it was amazing. So, I'd go, if I were you.

I know exactly what you mean though, one of the last concerts I went to was the Red Hot Chilli Peppers & Foo Fighters in Glasgow. Like you, I might as well have been watching it on TV. Not the same atmosphere at all. Watching The Eagles in BKK was far better, but only because we were really near the stage. Best ever has got to be Def Leppard in Birmingham. We were in the middle, but really small venue & the atmosphere was electric. Absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately the promoters care far more about money these days, than the audience experience.

I didnt know that Waters was palying Bangkok!
I saw the Clapton concert and was disappointed by the accoustics etc, but it was awesome to see a trully gifted set of musicians playing.
If i can get a ticket i will go.

Think you maybe right, when i saw the first advert for this concert on tv i checked and could not find any detail about a Bangkok concert, just checked Thai ticket master and nothing - if anyone knows different please let me know, would really love to see tis one - even with crappy accoustics in the impact area!

I also checked ThaiTicketmaster and found nothing. So I then went to the Roger Waters website and discovered that the concert to which the original poster referred will be in Hong Kong - this Thursday, 15th February.

After that Roger will be off to Mumbai, Dubai, and then South America.

Those of us who live in Thailand do seem to be deprived of good music, whatever one's taste.

But we can go to the beach, imbibe our substance of choice, and put our earphones in.

Which is much better than 'kicking around on an old piece of ground in your home-town,' any old day.

I am well over 40 but I have never heard of any of these pop singers.
I would certainly not pay one Baht to hear any of them.

So, Big Jimmy, you have been traced (we think) to Hong Kong. Bit cold there isn't it? Only about 26 degrees, while we are basking in 32 here. I bet you...

Big Jimmy, where did you actually see Clapton play, because as as far as I am aware he was playing an outside gig here is Perth last weekend and Pink Floyd are here sometime this week.

Yes you have all tracked me down..I am in Hong Kong and Clapton was here in late January..Waters is here this Thursday but with the cheapest ticket at US$50 for a seat in the gods which is about a 3 minute bus ride to the stage I am still thinking about it....

Weather here is just about 20degrees so its not too cold but I'll be back in Hua Hin at Easter to soak up the rays....................................and the Chang..

Jimmy, Clapton played here in Perth on the 11th Feb and Roger Waters on the 9th. Both gigs were at the Perth Glory football ground and the seats for Clapton ranged from $80.00 Aussie dollars up to just over $300, so at 50 USD you have a much better deal that we got here.
Have not seen a review on the Floyd show, but from all accounts Clapton was at his best.

If you dont go Jimmy you will proberly be kicking ya self for the rest of your life..Roger Waters mannn,,,he put on a hell of a concert (outside venue) here in N.Z in Jan.The stage show was unbelievable with 360 degree suround sounds.I shouted 15 of my mates as it was my birthday,,son included who was'nt really into Floyd but after the event he is now,,Was all a sit down event but after a few songs the place was rocking,Was truly one of the best concerts i have seen,attended,(and i've seen a few)..So if i was you Jimmy buy ya tickets and go...
