Shrinkwrap - is it a new religion?

Post by HHTel »

Why is it in Thailand that almost anything you buy with more than two parts that are assembled together are done so with the shrinkwrap on the individual parts? Furniture is one of the most common. I've just spent the afternoon with my toolbox dismantling a dressing table in order to get the shrinkwrap of each section. There are many other examples but what is the reason? The only thing that comes to mind is sheer bloody laziness.

When we finish with shrinkwrap, we can then start on how to take a rubber band off of a bag of Thai food/drink in less than 5 minutes, or without going jai laun and ripping the s*&t out of it...LOL.

With furniture I suspect it is to protect the fabric, nagahide/leather and wood/varnish from humidity while sitting in a warehouse.

If you know any Thai women over about 35, major purchases of furniture and appliances is reason to practice up on their best drama routine if there should be even the smallest defect upon arrival at the house. Where do you think Thai TV 3-5-7 get all their material? :o

If the shrinkwrap isn't cut or scratched, the belief probably is that what's underneath is ok. The delivery boys then escape in a cloud of smoke and all is well? Pete

Shrinkwrapping the assembled product as in the west would achieve the same smile from a wife and remove the heartache, handache, cuts and bruises and the headache from the husband.

My goodness, Pete, you've been in Thailand too long, worrying about these things. I'm afraid in this instance I'm still very farang. I neither undo the elastic band nor do I get jai lorn about it. I just take a pair of scissors & cut the bloomin' package or bag about half an inch underneath the bluddy (to borrow a Sarge-ism) thing!! :P

Truer words have never been spoken....LOL. However, I'm stuck with this new fruit of my loins and enjoying every damn minute....call me crazy. :D The sad part is, you would think I would have figured out the rubber bands by now? Pete
