Som tam, the ever-popular Thai spicy papaya salad, is ranked fifth in the latest list of the top 500 best dishes issued by Lonely Planet travel guide.
The popular magazine for travellers recently released “The Ultimate Eatlist’’ (or Ultimate Eats in the US), a ranked list of the top 500 foodie experiences from all over the world.
The top 10 best dishes, as printed, are: pintxos in San Sebastian, Spain; curry laksa in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; sushi in Tokyo, Japan; beef brisket in Texas, USA; Som tum (or Som tam) in Bangkok, Thailand; smorrebrod in Copenhagen, Denmark; crayfish in Kaikoura, New Zealand; bibimbap in Seoul, South Korea; pizza Margherita in Naples, Italy; and dim sum in Hong Kong.
The list was drawn up by expert food editors of Lonely Planet who enlisted the help of chef Adam Liaw and food blogger Leyla Kazim to rank the entries, according to the editors.
The entries were evaluated according to the taste, cultural importance and the special atmosphere of the location.

So the opinion of 2 people ..... very scientific.

Papaya salad is good, but mango salad is better – more flavour especially if the mango is sweet and sour.
Not sure why most people go for papaya.
Maybe papaya is cheaper and more available?

Yes som tam is definitely more available and popular than mango salad. I order mine with no sugar or those horrible little dried shrimp that get stuck between the teeth!

Perhaps Lonely Planet should stick to guide books.
How could Som Tom be the 5th best food in the world when 99.999% of the world's population have never even heard of it before, let alone tried it.
It is, after all, only a very basic salad, and not a particularly good one at that either. Not to mention the fact that if you go hardcore Isaan, then you end up with semi pulverized raw crab and chunks of fermented fish in various stages of decay.
Lesson to be learned: Never trust Lonely Planet when it comes ordering meals in a foreign country.
