Rich getting richer: Thailand most unequal country in 2018

Post by buksida »

Thailand has overtaken Russia and India as the most unequal country in the latest survey by a Swiss bank.

Banyong Pongpanich, chairman of Phatra Securities, posted on Facebook on Wednesday the findings of the Credit Suisse Global Wealth Databook 2018 conducted on 40 countries.

He expressed concern about the trend. Two years ago, Thailand ranked third in the report, after Russia and India.

“In 2016, the 1% richest Thais (500,000 people) owned 58.0% of the country’s wealth. In 2018, they controlled 66.9%, overtaking their peers in Russia whose wealth share fell from 78% to 57.1%,” he wrote.

Junta bringing happiness back to the people ... well the ones at the top anyway. No doubt the Thailand apologists on here will be out in force saying how this is a good thing for the economy or some equal horseshit.

In the long run, I think this will be good for the economy.

That's unfortunately the reality worldwide, I hope soon a worldwide revolution. Look at France, Macron is experiencing his May68.

It's been that way forever. The worst of it began under the Medici's in 14th C. Florence and continues to the present day.

A world wide revolution will not happen. The Govts. control the military & police who have all the weapons and, as has been seen many times, will use them on the populace.

I think that Trump is also a good example of rich getting richer.
I can only hope that someday a democratic government will get established in
Thailand and the military can go back to being just military, just will not hold my
breath waiting for this to happen.

OPINION: UNEQUAL THAILAND A DAILY STRUGGLE
hat Thailand is one of the most unequal societies on earth should be a concerns for all Thais, from those at the top all the way to the lowest echelons.

Last month, the National and Social Development Board vehemently denied that Thailand has the world’s largest income gap as reported by Credit Suisse Bank.

Days before Christmas, Al Jazeera claimed Thailand “has the greatest wealth gap in the world” with 1 percent of the population controlling more than two-thirds of the nation’s wealth.

This is not new news. Back in mid-2016, Credit Suisse claimed that Thailand was the third most unequal country in the world, with 1 percent owning 58 percent of the kingdom’s wealth, behind only Russia and India.

There aren't enough pitchforks in Thailand to start a revolution.
