Good old Gordon Brown in his bidget
With my meagre pension of 14GBP and needing to have a 4x4 as I live in the Peak District, I will now be 250 GBP worse off per year.

niggle,
Whilst I sympathise with all UK residents after being hit with more stealth taxes (although he seems to be claiming that most people won't be any worse off - time will tell), I am not really sure about the need for a gas guzzler.
OK, there may be the odd day when you get a bit of snow to contend with, but do you really need a gas guzzling 4 x 4 to mitigate the odd snow shower? How did people manage before 4 x 4s? They either had to learn how to drive a normal car properly, or stay at home in front of the fire until the weather eased.
If you're on a pension, you surely can't have any overriding need to travel anywhere whilst conditions are so poor. If you really do have to get out, then why does it have to be a gas guzzler? There are normal sized vehicles out there that offer 4 wheel drive.

An excellent idea. If more people would do this, he'd be able to reduce some taxes.Think I'll hit the bottle, take up smoking and drive more

I take your point
Sure I take your poit about 4x4s but really you should try some of the hills round here !
the daft thing is that those people who use the really big 4x4s are not going to be bothered about the road tax increase.
The sneaky bit about the tax is that he reduced the 22p rate to 20p from 2008 but abolished the 10p rate. This will hit the worst off and benefit the better off (as usual). He claims that the poorest will not be worse off as they can claim more in benefits - er... am I missing something here ?

We're talking about a couple of days snow disruption each year in the UK here. The last time I looked the UK was well below the Arctic Circle, and benefitting from the Gulf Stream and possibly (for the benefit of Jockey) Global Warming.
On the odd day when roads are impassable, the advice from police and traffic organisations is stay home. I know several people that use snow as their excuse to go out in their 4 x 4. Unfortunately, most of these clever people don't really know how to drive one properly anyway. Even if they can drive one correctly, where are they going? To have a snowball fight? If the disruption is bad enough to need a 4 x 4, everywhere will probably be closed anyway.

'Cos I can't understand it, although I'm sure there's method in the madness

Always gone with 4*4 since I worked in Africa
Why? Bigger and in the event of a crunch you come off better unless it's a truck or another 4*4
In africa I had a long wheel base Landrover with girders welded on the front and back. My daughters took it out for a spin and got hit from the rear by a 3 ton army truck full of drunken Zim soldiers. Damage? A dented rear door and all the dash indicators fell out. My daughters being Yorshire bred, jumped out grabbed the smiling drunken driver and handed him over to the police. The rest had fled!!!
Patched it up and drove around with a big sticker on the rear saying 'Best 4 by 4 so far'
Depends on your circumstances though. A school run, no way unless you live in the remotes
Unfortunately it's an image/ego trip but there again why own a Porche, Ferrari, Bugatti if you cannot legally go over 70 miles an hour?

It’s none of my business what people say and think of me. I am what I am and do what I do. I expect nothing and accept everything. It makes life so much easier.

richard,
Just to clarify a point - I have no problem with people owning/driving 4 x 4s. My gripe is when they start whinging about the cost of running a 4 x 4.
In England there is minimal need for owning/driving a 4 x 4 ie just a few days each year when the weather might be a little inclement. However, if you can afford one - why not. Its your choice.
