https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

KANCHANABURI: At least 10 people, mostly migrant workers, drowned after a 10-wheel trailer truck and a passenger van plunged into a canal following a crash in Tha Muang district around noon on Saturday.

As of 1.40pm on Saturday, eight bodies had been retrieved and four people rescued.

The fatal crash occurred at the Srasetthi intersection in tambon Ban Muang around 12.20pm when the passenger van carrying the workers collided with the trailer truck. The force of the crash threw the two vehicles and all 14 people travelling in them into a roadside canal, according to a rescue team and local media reports.

About 100 rescue workers, divers, police officers and soldiers were on the scene searching for the victims. Eight bodies were retrieved from the canal. The dead included a pregnant woman. Four people were safely rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, said a member of the rescue team.

It was believed two people were still in the canal, believed to have drowned. The search is ongoing.

14 hurt in multiple crashes after chicken fat spill

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

RATCHABURI: Fourteen people were hurt when chicken fat spilled on an overpass over an intersection in Muang district, causing multiple crashes involving 21 vehicles on the slippery road on Friday evening.

The incident happened on the overpass above the Jedi Hak intersection on southbound Phetchakasem Road, said Pol Capt Nareerat Harnnarong, a duty-officer at Muang police station.

Police and rescue workers rushing to the scene found 21 cars, pickup trucks and trucks involved in the crashes, which led to heavy traffic backups in the area.
Fourteen people were injured, 10 slightly. The wounded, mainly by broken glass, were sent to Ratchaburi Hospital.

Phalathorn Thapthimsuk, 23, driver of a pickup truck loaded with chicken fat in plastic bags, said he was travelling from Kanchanaburi to Phetchaburi at the time. While he was driving down the overpass, a tarpaulin covering the back of his truck suddenly blew away, causing many bags of fat to fall onto the road.

The bags broke and the chicken fat spilled onto the traffic lanes. Many motorists applied their brakes, causing them to lose control on the slippery road and crash into other vehicles.

Rescue workers later cleared up the scene.

Truck kills elderly seed collectors who had just voted

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

PHRAE: Two elderly people collecting teak seeds along a roadside in Muang district were killed when a pickup truck collided with a car and then ran off the road and hit them on Sunday.

The two relatives, Huan Jorjong, 76, and Sombat Khuenkaew, 64, had only a short time before cast their votes at a nearby polling station.

The fatal accident happened around noon on Phrae-Long Road in tambon Pamed, Pol Capt Narong Sonklin, a duty-officer at Muang police station said.
Police called to the scene found a Ford car with damage to its front stalled on the road and a damaged Isuzu pickup truck nearby in a ditch dividing the road. Both drivers waited for police to arrive.

Huan, a woman, was lying dead on the side of the road and Sombat was nearby, unconscious with serious injuries. Rescue workers rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he died shortly after.

Police investigators reported the pickup truck, driven by Kiatisak Lekkaew, 61, was heading to downtown Muang district when the car, driven by Pol Sgt Maj Phisit Boonmasueb, 65, came out of a nearby side street. Mr Kiatisak could not brake in time and his vehicle ran into the smaller car.

The force of the crash caused the pickup driver to lose control, and the vehicle ran off the road and hit the two elderly people collecting teak seeds in the centre dividing ditch.

The two elderly victims had cast their ballots at a polling station at Village Moo 1 in tambon Pamed late in the morning, before collecting the abundant teak seeds under the trees along the road.

Their votes will count.

Phetchaburi van crash ends schoolboys’ field trip
Eight students and a teacher from Narathiwat and the driver of their van were injured when it struck a tree in Phetchaburi at 2am on Sunday.

Two of the victims were critically injured in the mishap, which brought their field trip to a frightening end. Police believe driver Pakeem Daengteh, who it took half an hour to extricate from the wreckage, fell asleep at the wheel. He was taken to Cha-Am Hospital.

The math teacher on board said he was awoken by “a big bang” as he accompanied eight schoolboys ages 15 and 16 on the educational trip to Phetchaburi.

Almost all of these things for months have been after midnight and suspicions the driver fell asleep.

I don't need to go into the steps that need to be taken to avoid this. It's like a broken record playing. :banghead:

Drunk driver kills policeman, wife

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

The drunk owner of Thai Carbon & Graphite Co was arrested after crashing his Mercedes-Benz into a Suzuki Swift, killing a police lieutenant colonel and his wife and seriously injuring their daughter in Thawi Watthana district of Bangkok early on Friday morning.

Somchai Wayrotepipat, 57, was arrested while appearing drunk -- unaware of the incident and scolding off police and rescue workers. He was taken from his silver Mercedes-Benz E250 on Soi Ngam Thammachart off Thawi Watthana-Kanchanaphisek Road after the head-on collision at 12.40am.

His car collided with the white Suzuki Swift compact car of Pol Lt Col Chatuporn Ngamsuwichakul, 48. The policeman was killed instantly while his wife Nuchanart, 44, and their 16-year-old daughter Piyapa, were seriously injured. The wife later succumbed to her wounds at Rachapiphat Hospital in Bang Kae district.

Mr Somchai was not hurt but had an illegal blood alcohol level at 260mg/dL. Initially, he was charged with drink driving.

Thai Carbon & Graphite Co claimed to be the largest manufacturer of industrial brushes and mechanical carbon in Southeast Asia.

Pr****s like this should be shot in place of being arrested. Typical Poo Yai reaction! And now the poor kid is an orphan.

EDIT: Update is that the driver has now been charged with murder. Good!

Van on railway crossing hit by train, 6 killed, 9 hurt

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

LOP BURI: Six passengers, one a child, were killed and nine others hurt when a van driver went through a rail crossing barrier and into the path of a Bangkok-bound passenger train in Phatthana Nikhon district in the early hours of Friday.

The crash occurred at a railway crossing on the Lop Buri-Wang Muang road in tambon Nong Bua and was reported about 3am, Pol Col Krit Saengphon, superintendent of Phatthana Nikhon police station, said.

The wrecked van, with Ubon Ratchathani licence plates, came to rest up against a concrete barrier beside the crossing.
Rescuers found two men and two women dead inside the wreckage, and all 11 others on board, including the van driver, had injuries.

The injured were taken to two nearby hospitals, where two of them, a boy and a man, were later pronounced dead.
JS100 traffic radio reported the van had been driven around the barrier arm as the Nong Khai to Bangkok train approached. A bridge is being built over the track at the crossing and the area was dark at the time.

Pol Col Krit said the force of the impact threw the van off the crossing and into a concrete barrier on the roadside.
The van was taking 14 passengers to Ubon Ratchathani province.

The driver Wimol Wisetsat, was only slightly hurt, and would be interrogated, Pol Col Krit said.
After a short delay the train continued on to Bangkok.

Drunk Benz driver survives murder charges

Online news: https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/crime/ ... er-charges

The Taling Chan Court on Saturday rejected murder and attempted murder charges on the drink-driving businessman who killed a cop and his wife and injured their daughter in a head-on collision in Bangkok's Thawi Watthana district late Thursday night.

Police had pressed both murder charges in compliance with the government's new policy to curb the traffic death toll of the ongoing Songkran festival.

The Taling Chan Court ordered police of the Sala Daeng station to exclude the two charges and keep others -- reckless driving causing death, serious injuries and property damage and drink-driving causing death, injuries and property damage -- for Somchai Wayrotepipat.

Mr Somchai, 57, owner of Thai Carbon & Graphite Co, appeared drunk after crashing his silver Mercedes-Benz E250 with licence plate number Sor Hor 789 into the white Suzuki Swift of Pol Lt Col Chatuporn Ngamsuwichakul, 48, of the Crime Suppression Division.

The head-on collision happened on Thawi Watthana-Kanchanaphisek Road at 11.30pm on Thursday. The suspect's blood alcohol measured 260mg/dL just after the fatal crash.

The policeman was killed instantly on the driver's seat. His wife succumbed to wounds and died later while their 16-year-old daughter suffered serious brain haemorrhage. Mr Somchai was not wounded but has some leg pain.

Police told the court on Saturday that Mr Somchai had practised golf at a driving range in Thawi Watthana district and drank beer before leaving the place. On Thawi Watthana-Kanchanaphisek Road, his Mercedes-Benz veered off into the opposite lane and smashed the Suzuki car.

The court approved the 12-day detention extension of the suspect pending interrogation, autopsies and other inquiries. Later, the court approved a 200,000-baht bail request from his relative.

His elder brother Ratanachai Wayrotepipat on Saturday apologised for the incident and promised his family would take full responsibility for all the damage and would pay for the treatment of the injured girl and for the education of the dead policeman's two daughters.

Baby killed by lorry as mom on chat app
A 10-wheeler crushed an eight-month-old baby to death as his walker slid from a shop onto a road in Phra Samut Chedi district on Thursday afternoon.

As police arrived at Thidarat Air Service shop on Soi Suksawat 84, they found Wilawan Pitpan, 30, crying and holding the body of her son in front of the shop. His head was crushed and the right knee had a cut. The lorry was parked about five metres away and its driver was waiting for police.

...

Just before the death, she put the baby in the walker and let him play near the entrance, guarded by a one-metre-high makeshift barrier.

As she was typing on her mobile phone in a chat with her sister, the child pushed the walker hard against the barrier, which then gave way, and the walker slid onto the road, Mrs Wilawan said in tears.

Tragic ... but as zombie nation grows this sort of stuff will only increase.
