Two killed in Surat Thani pickup-train crash

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

SURAT THANI: A man and his daughter were killed and his wife seriously injured when their pickup went through an unmanned railway crossing into the path of a Bangkok-bound cargo train in Wiang Sa district in this southern province on Saturday morning.

The crash occurred at the railway crossing in tambon Ban Song when police were alerted at around 8am, said Pol Capt Kittisak Songphayom, deputy investigation chief at Wiang Sa police station.

A crushed Isuzu pickup truck with Surat Thani licence plates was found overturned about 50 metres away from the railway crossing when police and rescue workers arrived. There was no barrier at the crossing, only a warning light.

The body of a girl, identified later as Ananthalak Lao-ubon, 9, was found outside the pickup truck. Driver Kritsakorn Lao-ubon, 45, father of the girl, was found dead inside the wreckage. His wife Duangporn Khao, 42, was seriously hurt and trapped in the wreckage. She was rushed to a hospital and underwent emergency surgery, said police.

Two carriages of the cargo train, travelling from Thung Song district to Bangkok, were partly damaged.

Local residents told police that the family, whose house was not far from the scene, regularly used the route to go to Ban Song market in Wiang Sa district.

A police investigation found the train sounded a horn when approaching the crossing but the pickup truck went through it.

The girl was thrown out of the vehicle by the impact force.

It was the third train crash in this southern province since early this year. On Jan 22, two people were killed when their pickup truck hit by a Bangkok-Yala express train at a crossing in Tha Chana district. A month later, two people on board a car were killed when a Bangkok-Yala express rammed into their vehicle at a crossing in Phunphin district.
The third incident brought a total number of people killed in crossings crashes to six.

It’s bad enough having crossings with barriers, as many will still try to get through, but those without barriers are simply too dangerous and encourages those who cannot wait even a minute to take the risk and as this proves, the inevitable happens. RIP

I often look at these reported accidents and wonder how it happened. In this case both vehicles suffered extensive damage on the nearside of each vehicle. How does that happen?

Van runs red light, rams into local police chief's truck

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: The chief of police in Muang district and three other people were injured when a passenger van ran a red light and smashed into his police truck on Wednesday.

The crash happened at about 10.30am at the Ban Dong Tan three-way intersection in tambon Tha Ngew of Muang district.

Severe damage was caused to the front of both the silver Toyota passenger van and the official silver Toyota pickup truck carrying Pol Col Thewet Pluemsut, chief of the Muang Nakhon Si Thammarat police station. Pol Col Thewet and his deputy Pol Lt Col Apichart Kochawet suffered several cuts on their heads and were sent to Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital.

Their driver, Pol Cpl Chalongchai Thongsan, and van driver Seree Duangkaeo were slightly injured.
Police found that the van ran a red light at the intersection and turned right as the police truck was driving straight, leading to a head-on collision. The airbags in the police vehicle inflated, preventing more severe injuries.

Drink-driving businessman to pay B45m in damages

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

Auto-parts maker Somchai Wayrotepipat has agreed to pay 45 million baht in damages to the daughters and relatives of a police officer who was killed along with his wife in a head-on collision in Bangkok during the Songkran festival.

Thai media reported the deal was settled at the Sala Daeng police station in Bang Kae district on Thursday. Mr Somchai, his lawyer, relatives of the damaged family and their insurance agents were there to consider appropriate damages for the family following the collision that killed Pol Lt Col Chatuporn Ngamsuwichakul, 48, of the Crime Suppression Division, and his wife Nuchanart, 44, in mid-April.

Lawyer Weerawut Bamrungjai said Pol Lt Col Chatuporn's mother and a senior relative of Nuchanart would each receive 2.5 million baht in compensation for the financial support they would otherwise be receiving from the couple.
Their two daughters, aged 15 and 12, would get 15 million baht each. A trustee will be appointed by the Central Juvenile and Family Court to keep the money for them until they come of age.

The lawyer said Mr Somchai still felt guilty about the crash as he also had two daughters of school ages. Besides, he has quit drinking and driving, the lawyer said.

The 57-year-old businessman also gave 5 million baht each to the childhood families of the couple and paid 1.5 million baht for the treatment of the couple's younger daughter who suffered brain haemorrhage in the crash. The girl recovered and already returned to school.

The collision happened on Thawi Watthana-Kanchanaphisek Road at 11.30pm on April 11. Earlier Mr Somchai practised golf at a driving range and drank beer before driving his Mercedes-Benz E250 home. On the way he dozed off and woke after the crash. His blood alcohol measured 260mg/dL just after the crash with the couple's Suzuki Swift.

The owner of Thai Carbon & Graphite Co, claimed to be Southeast Asia's largest manufacturer of industrial brushes and mechanical carbon, became the first fatal drink driver charged with murder and attempted murder in accordance with the government's policy to curb drink driving during the Songkran festival.

The Taling Chan Court rejected both charges and accepted three others: drink driving causing death, drink driving causing serious injuries and drink driving causing property damage.

Police at the Sala Daeng station insisted that they would still press the murder charges.

Lorry laden with gas cylinders explodes under expressway

Lorry laden with gas cylinders explodes under expressway

https://www.bangkokpost.com/news/genera ... recent_box

SAMUT PRAKAN: A container lorry carrying more than 100 natural gas cylinders caught fire and exploded after a tyre burst under the elevated Bang Na-Bang Pakong expressway on Monday night.

The conflagration occurred on the inbound side at the 15th kilometre marker of Theparat (Bang Na-Trat) Highway in Bang Phli district at about 8pm on Monday.

Police found the lorry ablaze and heard a series of explosions from inside its cargo container. The flames reached the beams of the elevated expressway overhead, causing its burnt concrete surface plates to peel off and fall to the highway below.
Police stopped traffic and firefighters took about an hour to extinguish the blaze. No one was injured.

Lorry driver Chamlong Chanthamanee, 32, said he was hauling 125 cylinders of natural gas from a plant in Bang Bo district, Samut Prakan to deliver them to gas filling stations on Nuanchan Road in Bangkok.

As he was driving along Theparat Highway, a tyre burst and sparks from the wheel scraping along the road surface set fire to other tyres. He and his assistant tried to douse the flames with fire extinguishers, but the blaze quickly grew out of control.

Police were investigating the cause of the fire and were to ask engineers to check the affected stretch of expressway for structural damage.
