It's lowest was in the mid 80's when it dropped below 30, but since then the last low was in the mid 90's at around 37/38 before the crash which sent it soaring to just over 90.

You're wrong - I was here in 1992, and we were getting a little over 30 (probably about 32).

Sorry, BB. You were here a couple of years before me. I was here in '94 and I remember an exchange of 38.

I'm cheating but the fact is:

January 1992 ---- 45.98
December 1992 --- 38.64

To put things into perspective. Back in the 90's with exchange rates similar to today (before the crash), I remember petrol at 7 baht/ltr, cigarettes at 15 baht, a beer in Phatpong was 30 baht!

........and it was a 4 hour drive from BKK to Pattaya so some things have improved.

Not 100% sure, but I was probably here in May 1992. If not May, try March. I know the rate I was getting. We were here when there was a revolution, and bodies were piling up in Bangkok.

I don't understand this, but I've done an historical rate check, and it's nothing like the rate that was available :? So yes, on the historical charts you are totally correct.

The low rate really happened, and it's what I've based my worst scenario retirement plan on. Just as well I think, the way the Pound is currently plummeting.

Well let’s hope that history repeats itself, and what goes down will eventually go back up - probably wishful thinking, but I would always be happy with 50 Baht to £1

Shows an average of 44.83 with a 16% drop from beginning to end of year.

Have a little play yourself. It goes back as far as 1953

Both in agreement with what the chart says, but it's definitely wrong

Here's the charts. You could be right BB as what you were getting in exchange at the money shops was certainly lower than the official rate. I indeed remember the days of 25 for the USD before we all became rich men overnight.

EDIT: That 36.20 rate was April 1992

Anyway, the world carried on spinning, and it all got better. Let's look forward, whether it be up or down, the world will still be spinning, and we'll all manage in our own ways.

I think your memory may be failing you there. I'd been here for a while in '96 and it hovered aroun 40. Never hit 90 until after the crash in '97/'98 and it hit 90+ during '99. I was being pressured into moving money from the UK. "No. Let's wait. It's going to go over a hundred". Of course it didn't so missed an opportunity.
