I think your memory may be failing you there. I'd been here for a while in '96 and it hovered aroun 40. Never hit 90 until after the crash in '97/'98 and it hit 90+ during '99. I was being pressured into moving money from the UK. "No. Let's wait. It's going to go over a hundred". Of course it didn't so missed an opportunity.

Your probably right, The first time I came to Thailand was in 96 ( I remember because the footie Euros was in England) but maybe the crash was a year or 2 later. It all seemed like one big party back in those days though, everything was much cheaper

I was hoping the pound would strengthen or the baht weaken. Neither has happened.
P'ed off with myself as I have to transfer the 800 grand in the next couple of weeks to satisfy immigration. I could have transferred it 3 weeks ago and got around 45,000 baht more! I'm usually quite good at picking my time, but I failed miserably on this occasion.

You aren't alone. I had notification of this year's pension pay rise a couple of days ago - a pleasant £50/month. I transferred my 65,000 Baht(ish) this morning. Guess what, I had to transfer an extra £50 to cover the recent fall in the Pound

Because of the senseless trade war with China, every reason to think that the $ will drop in value. The pound is not fixed to the $ but is linked with it, just another reason for the pound/baht rate to go south.

Reading to two posts above makes me wonder.....
HHTel has been here a very long time and BB 7 years.
You are both here to stay...I presume...And still you are sticking to keeping your financials in the old country and only transfer what is needed for running expenses. And even after the hit you have got by the ever stronger baht...you stick to your plan.....Despite your home country currency probably is going to drop further....?
I simply don't get it....If you live in Thailand....move your money here and invest here. Depending on your risk profile you can get from 2% to 10% in returns....and you get paid in baht, your local currency and don't have to worry about exchange rates.....
With pensions from the old country, there is not much you can do, I understand that....just pray and hope that the baht doesn't get even any stronger.
My point is...You live here physically, so IMO you should live here financially as well.
When I moved here 17 years ago, I did it 100%.....invested here, and apart from some minor hick-ups that was the smartest thing I have done....Never looked back and don't have to worry about exchange rates.
But each to their own.

Unfortunately, my pension is paid into my UK account - I can't do anything about that. I won't give the Thai banks 400K until I leave the country or until I die, so I need to transfer 65K each month. So much easier when they did Embassy Letters.

Apart from my state pension (frozen) I have a couple of 'draw down' pensions, one managed from Gibraltar (2% tax). All in all I've had good returns from the investments giving an average 8% growth p.a. over the last few years. In fact one item on the portfolio returned 19% last year. I could cash it all in and move it to Thailand but I'm not sure I could do any better.
