Just seen on local TV news a Sombat Tour bus on the Hua Hin to Chiang Mai (or reverse) route was involved in an accident last night. No idea of casualties, but it looked as though there were some.

Cargo container crushes woman

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... shes-woman

AYUTTHAYA: A cargo container fell from a trailer truck and crushed a woman to death on Rojana Road in tambon Khan Ham of Uthai district about 2.30am on Monday.

Police said the container, holding about 20 tonnes of fertiliser, fell from a 22-wheel truck registered in Ayutthaya. It killed Radeepat Konnak, 34, who was standing beside her parked car, crushing her vehicle and one other, both registered in Bangkok.

The dead woman's friend, Kochapan Udomchaiprasertkul, 22, said Radeepat would have celebrated her birthday on Tuesday.

Truck driver Suban Phoson, 49, said he was making a delivery to Nakhon Luang district. He had swerved to avoid a fast moving car that was entering the road. The sudden change of direction caused the container to topple off the back of the truck, even though he had locked it down to the bed, he said.

14 hurt as tour bus overturns at Chiang Mai curve

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -mai-curve

CHIANG MAI: Fourteen people were hurt, three seriously, when a bus carrying Chinese tourists overturned at a dangerous spot that local people call “the curve of a hundred corpses” in Doi Saket district on Saturday afternoon.

The accident happened on the Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai road between kilometre markers 30-31 at Ban Mae Wan village, said Pol Col Pongpeera Karadket, chief of Doi Saket police station, who was alerted at 3.45pm.

The Hana Tour bus with Chiang Mai licence plates was found overturned by the roadside. Many passengers were seen trying to escape from the overturned vehicle, Thai media reported.

Rescue workers rushed to help them. A total of 14 people, including Chinese tourists, the driver and a bus staffer, were hurt. Three were badly injured. All were taken to Doi Saket Hospital.

A police investigation found that the bus, driven by Thanong Tippor, 45, was taking 12 Chinese tourists from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai. It failed to negotiate the sharp curve, causing it to strike a concrete kilometre marker before it overturned.

Local residents said road accidents occurred frequently in the area, which explained the grisly name given to the location.

Drunk driver kills policeman, wife
Drink-driving tycoon indicted but escapes murder charge

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... der-charge

A business tycoon involved in a drink-driving accident that killed a police officer and his wife, and injured their daughter, has been indicted in the Talingchan Court, which has set July 31 for the delivery of the verdict, according to media reports.

On April 11, Somchai Werojpipat, 56, a factory owner, rammed his Mercedes-Benz sports car into a car driven by Pol Lt Col Jatuporn Ngamsuwichakul, deputy chief investigator of the 2nd Sub-Division of the Crime Suppression Division, while driving under the influence.

The police officer and his wife were killed in the accident, which took place in Bangkok's Thawi Watthana district. Their youngest daughter, who was also in the car, was injured.

Police initially charged the tycoon with murder and attempted murder, which carry severe penalties, citing the grave consequences of the accident caused by drink-driving.

But the prosecutors of the Thonburi Criminal Litigation Office 5 decided to indict Mr Somchai in the Talingchan Court on three charges: driving over the speed limit; driving while drunk or intoxicated, causing deaths, injuries and damage to property; and reckless driving in a manner that could cause death, serious injury or damage to property.

The prosecutors dropped the murder and attempted murder charges proposed by the police, reasoning that the factors surrounding the accident did not justify them.

Before the indictment, Mr Somchai was released on 200,000-baht bail.

The court has set July 31, at 9am, for the delivery of its verdict.

Drunk driver in fatal crash gets suspended sentence

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... d-sentence

An inebriated Mercedes-Benz driver who crashed into and killed a senior police officer and his wife has been given a suspended three-year jail sentence and banned from drinking alcohol for life.

Taling Chan Provincial Court on Wednesday passed the sentence on Somchai Wayrotepipat, 57, owner of Thai Carbon & Graphite Co, said to be the largest manufacturer of industrial brushes and mechanical carbon in Southeast Asia.

The court took into account the 45 million baht in compensation the repentant defendant had already settled on the victims' children and their families.

He was arrested after crashing his Mercedes-Benz E250 into a Suzuki Swift in Thawi Watthana district in the early morning of April 12.

Two people inside the Suzuki were killed - Pol Lt Col Chatuporn Ngamsuwichakul, 48, deputy chief of the Crime Suppression Division's Subdivision 2, and his wife Nuchanart, 44. The victims' youngest daughter, who was also in the car, was seriously injured.

Somchai's blood alcohol reading after the crash was 260mg/dL, many times the legal driving limit.

He was initially charged with murder and attempted murder in accordance with the then-government's policy to curb drink driving during the Songkran festival.

The Taling Chan Court rejected both charges and accepted three others: drink driving causing death, reckless driving causing serious injury and drink driving causing property damage.

The court initially sentenced him to the maximum six years in prison and a fine of 200,000 baht. The sentence was commuted to three years and a fine of 100,000 baht because of Somchai's repentance, compensation for the victims' families and his past record free of any legal punishment.

The jail sentence was suspended for three years. He was ordered to report regularly to the Probation Department for two years, do 48 hours of community services in one year, and not to drink any kind of alcoholic beverage.

Somchai said he was grateful for the affected people for their forgiveness, and already decided to quit alcohol for life.

He earlier settled compensation of about 45 million baht - including 15 million baht each for the victims' two teenage daughters, and 2.5 million baht for each family of the late couple.

One killed, 19 hurt when bus carrying students overturns
A bus staffer was killed and 19 people — 18 school students and the driver — injured when a tour bus carrying students from Hat Yai to attend a mathematic camp in Bangkok hit a roadside tree and overturned in Lang Suan district of this southern province.

The crash happened at kilometre makers 56-57 on Bangkok-bound Asia 41 Road in tambon Na Kha at around noon, said Pol Col Manot Plodkhan-ngoen, deputy investigation chief at Ban Nai Hood police station in Lang Suan district.

...

Driver Warodom Chudrung, 27, who was among the injured, told police that he felt sleepy while driving and tried to drive to a rest area. However, he did not know when he fell asleep at the wheel and woke up when the bus hit a tree and overturned.
