SONGKHLA: Five workers taking a rest after cutting grass were killed and another one badly hurt when a car driven by a Malaysian tourist rammed into them in Rattaphum district on Tuesday afternoon.
The fatal crash occurred at around 3pm on Asia Highway in tambon Khuhatai, said Pol Lt Col Thewa Daoruang, investigation chief at Rattaphum police station.
A black Proton car with Malaysian licence plates was found plunged into a ditch when police arrived at the scene.
A police investigation found that the car, driven by a 31-year-old Malaysian woman, was travelling from Krabi on the way to Hat Yai in Songkhla when it hit something on the road. This caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which rammed into a group of six workers sitting along the road and plunged into the roadside ditch.
The force of the crash killed four workers on the spot and seriously hurt two others. One of the injured workers was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The dead victims were identified as Iem Chaikaew, 53; Witchaya Thongma, 51; Somporn Sawatdiraksa, 54; Theerawut Mongkhol, 37; and Wirat Semkhai, 34. The injured worker was identified as Bamreur Ketmoon, 56. All worked at the Kamphaeng Phet highway station.
The Malaysian woman of the Kelantan state, who drove the car, and two other Malaysian women were unhurt.
Police were investigating and charges would be pressed against the driver. They have notified the Malaysian consulate attached to Songkhla about the crash.
Ms Pimthada Chansuriya, chief of Rattaphum district, inspected the scene of the crash and ordered concerned agencies to take care of the families of the dead victims and the injured worker. She later went to the police station to follow up the police investigation.
Ngamphon Buaphud, driver of the Kamphaeng Phet highway station, said eight workers had cut grass along the road before the crash. Six of them later took a rest near at the ditch dividing the road when the car hit them.

A white van with Nonthaburi licence plates with its front badly damaged was found in the middle of the road when police and rescue workers arrived at the scene. People were trapped in the wreckage, and an 18-wheel trailer truck was found nearby.
Rescue workers managed to retrieve all six injured passengers from the van. Among them were a Taiwanese man and a girl, aged five years old. The six injured were rushed to Sop Prap Hospital. One of them, identified later as Saengduen Phueknok, 54, of Khon Kaen, was seriously hurt.
The trailer truck driver told police that while he was travelling in the left lane, he heard a loud crash at the rear of his truck. He looked back and saw the van had rear-ended his vehicle. He stopped and called police.
Van driver Pongpipat Konsombat, 33, who was unhurt, said he was driving a group of Thai and Taiwanese tourists from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. It was raining and he saw something cut in front of him. He swerved to avoid a crash, but the van rear-ended the truck instead.
Police are still investigating but indicated the van driver would be charged with reckless driving causing injury.

SA KAEW: Eleven people, most of them Lao nationals, were killed and four others were injured in a violent collision between a passenger van and an 18-wheel lorry in Wang Sombun district of this eastern province on Sunday morning, police said.
Pol Capt Suchart Kokaewthongma, an investigator from Wang Sombon police station, said the accident occurred at about 4.10am on the road under repair in front of the Wang Sombun district office.
The van, with a Bangkok registration plate number, was badly damaged on the right side, with its windshield shatterred. The front of the lorry was also damaged.
Rescuers from an emergency rescue unit used heavy tools to cut open the van and extracted the passengers and the driver from the vehicle.
Eleven people, five men and six women, lost their lives. One of them was the Thai driver of the van, identified as Sansern Jirathongkhan, while the others were initially reported Lao nationals. Four other Lao passengers were injured.
The Thai driver of the lorry was also injured.
The injured were admitted to Wang Sombun Hospital for treatment.
Police were investigating to establish the cause of the accident.

PATHUM THANI: An NGV filling station employee told police he noticed a smell like something burning shortly before a trailer truck exploded in flames early on Thursday.
The incident occurred at the PTT’s Srisomboonpattana filling station near the motorway in tambon Khlong Si about 3.30am, said Pol Lt Supanat Bunditthai.
The trailer truck was already engulfed in flames when six fire trucks and crews arrived.
It took them about 20 minutes to extinguish the blaze. The truck, trailer and cargo were destroyed and the PTT outlet severely damaged, but there were no injuries reported.
The PTT employee told police he noticed a smell like something burning when the truck pulled in and the driver said to top it up with gas.
Shortly afterwards flames erupted from around the rear wheels.
The man told police he had not yet opened the gas valve and went to talk to the driver, who had just got down from the truck.
Suddenly, flames erupted from the rear wheels of the truck and spread quickly to a tarpaulin covering the cargo, which was mostly plastic and tissue paper products.
He and the driver tried to put put the flames with a fire extinguisher, to no avail. He called out to other staff to switch off the gas delivery system, and call police.
Driver Chamnarn Chachamnarn, 57, told police he was taking cargo from Makro’s Wang Noi warehouse in Ayutthaya to a warehouse in Bangkok’s Ram Intra. It was raining and he pulled into the NGV station, intending to top up and rest.
While still filing up with gas, the truck suddenly caught fire. He jumped from the cab and fled the vehicle. The flames quickly spread around the wheels and the NGV gas nozzle. He and PTT employees tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the flames before fire crews arrived.
The driver was being questioned further. Forensic officers were at the scene to help establish the cause of the fire. The investigation was cotinuing.

Missing councillor found in submerged pickup

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: The body of a municipal councillor missing for eight months has been found in a submerged pickup truck pulled from a pond in Sikhiu district after human remains floated to the surface.
Police were called to the resort in tambon Nong Namsai about 11pm on Thursday after the discovery of part of a human ankle in a sock.
Divers later searched the pond and found a submerged Toyota Vigo pickup truck with Nakhon Ratchasima licence plates, and a man's body inside the cabin.
Local residents gathered to view the spectacle as the vehicle was hauled from the water.
Chanakarn Khotsombat said the vehicle and documents inside showed that the dead man was her nephew, a councillor for Nong Nam Sai tambon municipality who had been missing since Dec 27 last year.
Pol Lt Col Theerasak Khongyingruangsin, deputy Sikhiu police chief, said relatives confirmed the dead man was Wanchai Phim-ubon, who was reported missing eight months ago.
He had vanished after attending a New Year’s party nearby. Witnesses said he was drunk when he left in his car. Relatives had searched for several months but found no trace of him until his ankle popped up on Thursday, the deputy police chief said.
The former councillor's body was sent to Sikhiu Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police said they would investigate the circumstances of his death.

A van carrying Pol Gen Patcharawat Wongsuwon, 70, who is a former police chief, and Prasobsuk Boondej, 74, a former president of the Senate and the Court of Appeal, overturned after hitting a roadside barrier. The incident took place on Friday night at kilometre 1 of the Thab Chang motorway in Prawet district in Bangkok.
The other three in the group were Wiset Winyu, Supawadee Techaburana and Pacharee Mahititamtorn. Pratipat Tantahisong, 32, the driver working for the car rental company, was also slightly injured.
They were sent to Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital. Pol Gen Pacharawat was later transferred to Phramongkutklao Hospital. He sustained a spine injury and cracked collarbone but does not need surgery, according to Thai media.
Police said they were preparing to charge the driver of the van with carelessness causing damage and injuries.
The van, brand new with red licence plates, was rented from Thai Rent A Car Co Ltd.
An initial investigation found the van was taking the group on an observation trip to Pattaya. While the driver reached out to charge his mobile phone, he lost control of the vehicle.

At Moo 16 village in tambon Thung Prang, the police vehicle skidded off the bumpy road, overturned and rammed into an oil palm tree. The three police officers were injured and taken to Sichon Hospital where Pol L/Corporal Chalerm was pronounced dead.
The body was later moved to his home in Thung Song district for a religious rite.
Sichon police have been instructed to continue with the hunt for the suspect.

PRACHIN BURI: The driver of an interprovincial bus was killed and 33 passengers hurt when the bus heading to the Northeast rear-ended a trailer truck in Kabin Buri district in the early hours of Saturday.
The crash happened on Kabin Buri-bound Road No.304 in front of the Kabin Buri poultry research station in tambon Lat Takhian at around 1.20am, said Pol Capt Prayong Mongwongsuwan, deputy investigation chief at Srabua police station in Kabin Buri.
The Rayong-Nong Khai bus, operated by 407 Pattana Co, was found in a roadside ditch when police and rescue arrived at the scene. The front of the bus was badly damaged with the driver badly hurt and trapped inside.
Rescue workers took more than 30 minutes to retrieve the bus driver, identified later as Sombat Keepchampee, from the wreckage. Mr Sombat and 33 injured passengers were rushed to hospitals, but the bus driver was later pronounced dead.

Wichian Suwansonthi, 60, another bus staff member, said he sat next to the driver. It was raining along the route and the bus tried to overtake the trailer truck, but failed. This caused the bus to ram into the back of the truck, he added.
Yosakorn Soda, 39, one of the injured passengers, confirmed Mr Wichian’s account.
Pol Lt Col Prapon Srithongpian, deputy chief of Kabin Buri police, said the injured were sent to three nearby hospitals. Police were investigating.
The bus operator sent another bus to take the unhurt passengers to Nong Khai.

PRACHIN BURI: The driver of an interprovincial bus was killed and 33 passengers hurt when the bus heading to the Northeast rear-ended a trailer truck in Kabin Buri district in the early hours of Saturday.
The crash happened on Kabin Buri-bound Road No.304 in front of the Kabin Buri poultry research station in tambon Lat Takhian at around 1.20am, said Pol Capt Prayong Mongwongsuwan, deputy investigation chief at Srabua police station in Kabin Buri.
The Rayong-Nong Khai bus, operated by 407 Pattana Co, was found in a roadside ditch when police and rescue arrived at the scene. The front of the bus was badly damaged with the driver badly hurt and trapped inside.
Rescue workers took more than 30 minutes to retrieve the bus driver, identified later as Sombat Keepchampee, from the wreckage. Mr Sombat and 33 injured passengers were rushed to hospitals, but the bus driver was later pronounced dead.

I'm struggling with this scenario. If you fail to overtake, you don't usually slam into the vehicle in front. Sounds like incompetence to me, or the driver just fell asleep and they are making excuses for him / the company.

Pickup struck by train at unmanned rail crossing in Ban Pong, Ratchaburi
RATCHABURI: A Kerry Express delivery driver was killed when his pickup truck went through an unmanned railway crossing into the path of a train in Ban Pong district on Saturday morning.
The crash happened at the Ban Thaiyai crossing in tambon Tha Pha at 10.20am on Saturday, said Pol Lt Col Kriangsak Buaphor, a duty officer at the Ban Pong police station.
Police and rescue workers who risked to the scene found the Kerry Express orange pickup truck with Bangkok licence plates in the grass beside the railway track.
The driver’s side of the pickup truck was crushed and the windscreen broken. The driver, identified later as Jirawat Raknitwet, 37, suffered serious head injuries and died later at Ban Pong Hospital.
Police said the employee of Kerry Express Co was on the way to deliver goods to customers in nearby villages. His pickup truck reached the crossing at Ban Thayai village at the same time as the train, heading from Thon Buri to Nam Tok station in Kanchanaburi, was approaching. The train sounded its horn, but the pickup went through the crossing and was hit.
The force of the crash threw the pickup truck about 200 metres.
Local residents who witnessed the incident told police that they saw the pickup travelling at high speed before going through the crossing. They said they kept shouting to warn the driver that the train was approaching, but he did not hear.
