What is that? I've found you can download photos in that format to your system, but you can't open them, or subsequently attach them to anywhere else.

Is Google now trying to dominate photo formats? :banghead:

I'm not sure where you're getting that, but I have definitely noticed when searching things on google, it's impossible to download images. However, it is still possible to capture images from Google Images.

I've seen it in quite a few places when trying to grab a photo for a forum post. Latest was the post about the new U-Tapao terminal. Great aerial shot of the runway/area and was in that format.

Edit: My system shows the format when downloading a photo. Sometimes there are options, in the above case the only option was "all files" which doesn't change anything with the image, it just gives you the computer programming language instead of the photo.

This is what you see after downloading a photo restricted to that format.

I've never come across it before. If it happens again, this might help.
How do I convert WebP to JPG?
Right-click on the image, then click Open With > Paint if it's not set to open WebP files by default. Once you open the image in Paint, click File > Save As, then choose a format from the list available. Choose a destination for the file, then click “Save.”Jun 26, 2019

Thanks, but their quest for power and influence goes too far me thinks! :banghead:

Everyone wants to become the standard and force people to use their system. Apple and Microsoft are the worst but Google is playing catchup.

Yes, it is 25% smaller than a jpeg but the world doesn't really need another image format since storage is so cheap these days.

You can almost see Google's next move - punish webmasters that do not use its image format.
