PHITSANULOK: Two cars collided on Highway 117 in Muang district of this lower northern province on Sunday, killing the driver of one car and seriously injuring the other, police said.

A police investigation revealed that Samroeng Chanthornrak, 41, of Phitsanulok's Wat Bot district, was driving a Toyota Vios along the out-bound side of Highway 117 at kilometre marker 123 when his car collided with a Mercedes Benz driving against the legal traffic flow.

Both vehicles were badly damaged in the violent head-on collision. The accident happened five minutes after midnight.

Road accident drill causes real death

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: A road accident response drill went terribly wrong, leading to the death of a woman motorcyclist, in Phimai district on Sunday.

The road drill followed a visit by Deputy Interior Minister Niphon Bunyamanee, who laid down his road safety policy for the New Year holiday at the Phimai district office on Sunday.

In the afternoon local district and health officials, and rescue workers organised a road accident response exercise on the highway at Ban Tam Yae intersection in tambon Krabueang Yai.

Traffic police closed one side of Phimai-Talad Khae Road, and opposing flows of vehicles were directed to use the other side.

Tragically, this led to a collision between a motorcycle and a loaded sugarcane truck pulling a trailer.

The woman motorcyclist was run over and crushed to death, and her male companion seriously injured. She was identified as Dawan Termsuk, a local resident.

The safety drill was being held on a busy road where motorists tend to drive fast -- except sugarcane trucks.

Nakhon Ratchasima is a national highway gateway between the Central Plains and the Northeast, and usually heavily congested during the New Year holiday.

There was no comment available from the organisers of the road safety drill.

Mother, son on motorcycle killed by speeding drug courier

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... ug-courier

NAKHON PHANOM: A woman and her 12-year-old son were killed when a speeding vehicle driven by a drug courier fleeing arrest crashed head-on into their motorcycle in Muang district on Wednesday night.

Thotsaporn Rattanawong, 25, of Sakon Nakhon’s Ban Muang district, was driving a black Toyota Fortuner with Ubon Ratchathani licence plates.

He noticed police following him around 8pm on Wednesday and accelerated away in a bid to shake them off.

The driver fled at high speed along Sunthornwichit Road, on the side of Mekong River, heading towards downtown Muang district, and hit a motorcycle travelling in the opposite direction, according to police.

The crash killed the pillion rider, a 12-year-old boy. The boy’s mother, Surapha Phimphanon, 46, an administration official at the provincial probation office, was badly injured and died shortly after, police said.

A search of the crashed Fortuner found 360 slabs of compressed marijuana, each weighing one kilogramme, inside nine fertiliser sacks. Police put the value at 5 million baht.

Mr Thotsaporn allegedly confessed he was being paid 50,000 baht to take the marijuana from Tha Uthen district in Nakhon Phanom to a storage place in Sakon Nakhon. A car driven by an accomplice had been travelling ahead of him.

He was alerted that a police car was following him, attempted to flee, and hit the motorcycle.

Police charged him with possession of an illicit drug, resisting arrest and reckless driving causing death.

Sixteen Singaporean tourists were injured, five of them seriously, when their tour bus skidded off a road in Muang district of Thailand’s central province of Sing Buri on Friday night.

All the injured passengers were rushed to the provincial hospital by rescue workers from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation.

Police said that the tourists were taken on a tour of a church and Channasoot local market in Bang Rachan district, where a Christmas celebration was being held.

They were on their way back to their hotel when the accident occurred, said the police, adding that the bus driver had apparently tried to avoid a collision with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction, but lost control of the bus and ploughed into roadside bushes, with the bus ending up on its side.

Exploding manhole cover severely injures motorcyclist

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... torcyclist

LAMPANG: An explosion in a utilities tunnel blew off a manhole cover that severely injured a woman motorcyclist on Thursday afternoon.

The explosion occurred in a tunnel on Tha Khrao Noi Road in tambon Sob Tui of Muang district about 1.35pm as Ratee-anothai Lomwandee, 21, was passing over the access cover on her mototcycle.

Surveillance camera footage showed the woman and her bike being blown up into the air. When she fell back on the road another motorcycle ran over her unconscious body.

Ms Ratee-anothai suffered a five-centimetre-long cut on her chin, a broken nose and cheekbone, and extensive bruising to her body.

Officials said the iron manhole cover, one metre in diameter, provided access to TOT communication cables. The tunnel was flooded with hot water immediately after the explosion.

Lampang governor Narongsak Osotthanakorn said he had ordered an immediate investigation. Samples of water were collected from the tunnel for testing.

DRIVER TAKES DOWN 12 UTILITY POLES, INJURING 7

SAMUT PRAKAN — Seven people were wounded after a pickup truck driver crashed into a utility pole Friday, causing widespread damage and cutting off electricity at a busy stretch of road in Samut Prakan.

A total of 12 utility poles were brought down by Siriprapha Po-mhoo, 25, who drove her truck at top speed into one of them on Sukhumvit Road in front of Samut Prakan Technical College. At least 15 vehicles were also damaged. Major congestion is reported in the area.

“There’s a lot of traffic right now. We’re trying our fastest to clear the road of debris,” Police Col. Pisut Jantasuwan said. “As for electricity, that will probably return late at night since we have to lay down new lines and put up new poles.”

Pisut said five people were in Siriprapha’s car. Siriprapha and a passenger were gravely injured.

“Her injuries are still very serious right now, so we didn’t charge her yet,” Pisit said.

Citing eyewitness accounts and CCTV footage, police said Sirprapha lost control of her vehicle at the curve. The accident came just as many commuters are leaving Bangkok for a New Year’s Eve vacation.

Police also said accidents around the vicinity are common, with a fatal accident occurring just last month.

Doesn't say much for the safety of those poles (erection etc) if one rogue vehicle can bring down 12 of them!

The problem with those concrete poles is that they are only strong when the load is in compression. The one that the car broke off tipped over to the side and the weight of the cables did the rest.

Nine hurt as van strikes tree in Lampang

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... in-lampang

Police say driver may have dozed off on 630km trip from Saraburi to Chiang Mai

LAMPANG: Nine people were hurt, five seriously, when a van carrying New year celebrants from Saraburi to Chiang Mai crashed into a roadside tree in Ko Kha district on Saturday.

The crash occurred between kilometre markers 670 and 671 on Phahon Yothin Road in tambon Nasaeng on Saturday afternoon, said Pol Capt Kankawee Meetham, deputy investigation chief of the Ko Kha police station.

A van with Bangkok licence plates was found crashed into a tree when police and rescue workers arrived at the scene.

Driver Suchart Srisuwan, 57, and eight other passengers — seven adults and a 10-year-old girl — were injured. Five were badly hurt and rushed to Ko Kha Hospital, Thai media reported.

A police investigation found that the van had left Saraburi at around 4am for the 630-kilometre journey to Chiang Mai. As it passed through Ko Kha in Lampang, it skidded off the road and struck the tree. Police initially believed Mr Suchart had fallen asleep at the wheel.

Late-night year-end party blamed for crash

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... -for-crash

SAMUT PRAKAN: A woman driver who crashed her car into a power pole, causing a string of accidents, had been at a year-end party the previous night and had little sleep, according to relatives and police.

Siriprapha Photmoo, the 25-year-old driver, remained unconscious in Samut Prakan Hospital over the weekend, as anxious relatives watched over her.

On Friday she crashed her pickup truck into a roadside power pole on Sukhumvit Road in tambon Bang Poo of Muang district.

The pole fell to the ground, dragging about 10 other poles down with it, and blacking out a large area. Some of the poles hit other vehicles and injured people.

The resulting traffic snarl-up stretched back along 10 kilometres of the road.

"My friends and I were sleeping. My elder sister Siriprapha was the driver... I woke up after the accident... I think the driver dozed off," said Jariya Pinchaeng, 23, who suffered a cut face and chest pains.

Ms Siriprapha was driving a brown Toyota Vigo pickup truck, taking her and four passengers back home to Pak Nam district after visiting Ms Siriprapha's boyfriend at Khlong Dan prison on Friday morning.

The driver's mother, Wichuda Morakot, 44, said her daughter may have dozed off at the wheel. She had been at a year-end party late into Thursday night and left home about 6am on Friday.

She was aware of the considerable damage caused by the accident. Their family was poor and jobless, and could not afford even the vehicle's annual tax and compulsory insurance. However, they would do their best to pay compensation, Mrs Wichuda said.

"I am sorry about what happened. No one would wish it to happen. I am speechless, knowing well that my child was in the wrong," she said.

Ms Wichuda said Ms Siriprapha suffered severe internal injuries and bleeding as a result of the crash, and not just the swollen face and bruises that were clearly evident.

Pol Col Pisut Chantarasuwan, chief of Bang Poo police, said the driver and passengers in the pickup were on their way home from Khlong Dan prison. The passengers were all aseep.

Camera footage showed the vehicle failed to slow down on a curve and ran straight ahead and up onto the footpath. "This together with witness accounts indicates the driver possibly dozed off," he said.

A doctor believed the driver would be ready for questioning in a week. She would be charged with reckless driving causing injuries and damage, and driving a vehicle with expired registration and compulsory insurance, Pol Col Pisut said.

Man, daughter killed in car-train crash

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... rain-crash

Three other family members hurt at unmanned crossing in Hat Yai

SONGKHLA: A man and his 22-month old daughter were killed and three other family members were hurt when a freight train struck their car at an unmanned crossing in Hat Yai district on Saturday.

The crash occurred at the crossing at Ban Lob Mum village in tambon Phatong, said Pol Col Piyapong Sangthong, a duty officer at the Thung Long police station, who was notified at around 12.15pm.

A white Toyota Yaris sedan with Phatthalung licence plates was found badly damaged about 30 metres away from the crossing when police and rescue workers arrived.

The driver, identified later as Phonnarin Khongmee, 28, was found dead behind the wheel. His baby daughter was found dead outside the car. Injured were Mr Phonnarin’s wife Methinee Khongmee, 28, their daughter aged 2, and the driver’s younger sister, whose name was not yet known, said police.

A police investigation found that the five family members were travelling from their home in Phatthalung to visit relatives not far from the crash scene. The driver might have not been familiar with the route when he arrived at the unmanned crossing. The freight train, which was travelling from Padang Besar to Hat Yai, was approaching at the time.

The train driver told police that he saw the car driving through the crossing when his train was approaching at the normal speed of 70 kilometres per hour. He sounded his horn several times and applied the brakes but could not stop the train, which rammed into the car at the crossing.

Local residents said there were frequent accidents involving trains and vehicles at the crossing. In October last year, a train rammed into a pickup truck there, injuring three people.

I guess that by 'unmanned' means 'ungated/barriered'. Most crossings are 'unmanned' but have automatic barriers. There are many cases where vehicles, especially m/cycles, drive through the barriers.
I guess this wasn't the case this time. Just a problem of not looking.

You can see the crossing in the photo. There doesn't seem to be any obstruction to a driver's view of the track.

The video shows why it's a damn good idea to wear seat belts in your hire van! Passengers (British) strewn across the highway like rag dolls. I think a few are still in critical condition. :(
