Thailand confirms 91 more coronavirus cases; one more death.
Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health confirmed 91 more coronavirus cases on Friday with one more fatality bringing the total death toll to five.

The total number of confirmed cases stands at 1,136 patients. Today’s toll was the lowest reporting number in six days.

Of that number 11 people are in serious or critical condition, ministry spokesman Dr Anupong Sujariyakul told reporters at a daily press briefing.

The new fatality was an individual from the southern province of Narathiwat.

Anupong said that the virus has now spread to 52 provinces with 88.3 per cent (1,003 patients) of cases being Thai nationals while the rest (133 patients) being foreign nationals.

Anupong said the people most at risk were those with diabetes, high blood pressure, and people with respiratory conditions like asthma.

Yesterday, the Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul came under criticism for statements he made about Thai doctors and healthcare professionals.

Anutin said that he was disappointed that medical workers were not taking the right precautions after at least 6 doctors and nurses contracted the coronavirus.

He also said that they should be spanked.

Autin has since apologised for his words, saying he wasn’t listening to the reporter’s question clearly. But the public health minister has not done enough to praise the work that our doctors and nurses are doing and if he will not do it, we will.

Other than the fact we know TIT, it beggars belief how such an important subject could be left so inconclusive as to its meaning - surely as a recognised second language in Thailand, somebody in an official Government capacity could issue an English translation !!

I absolutely agree.

My daughter currently in the States was educated in the UK. Both languages are 'first' languages.
My daughter in London, born in the UK but educated in Thailand and has now been in London for more than 3 years. My resident daughter, born in the UK but educated here.
In all 3 cases they are truly bi-lingual. The least believable is my wife whose English is a 2nd language.

The Bangkok Post has had it wrong on occasion as has The Nation.

But rather than leaving it to the media, the authorities should produce a translation. You would think they'd be up to that.
Maybe Abhiset could be asked 'for a favour'. He's probably the only one in the political arena that is qualified in English. Eton College, Oxford University etc. But of course that would mean someone losing face!

China's imported cases rise as foreigners banned and flights cut

BEIJING: China reported more than 50 imported cases of the coronavirus on Friday, hours after announcing a ban on foreigners entering the country.

In recent weeks China's tally of infections has dwindled dramatically, with only a handful of domestic patients each day. But just as the country appears to bring the outbreak under control, nations around the globe have been battling to control soaring numbers of infections in new hotspots.

There were another 55 new infections in China Friday, the National Health Commission said, with one local infection and 54 imported cases from overseas.

Beijing has been racing to control the number of infections being brought into the country -- mostly Chinese nationals returning home from overseas, including large numbers of students abroad.

On Thursday Beijing announced dramatic measures to curb arrivals into the country, including reducing the number of international flights, limiting the capacity on board to 75%, and imposing a ban on foreigners entering China.

Non-nationals living in China with valid visas and resident permits will be blocked from returning to the country after midnight on Friday night, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said it was a "temporary measure that China is compelled to take in light of the outbreak situation."

Diplomats and the crew of international airlines and vessels will still be permitted to enter.

Flights in and out of China will also be capped at just one route a week to each country, including for international airlines.

The tally of cases brought into China from abroad climbed to 595 on Friday, health officials said.

A series of strict measures had already been put in place to try and stem the wave of infections coming in.

All Beijing-bound international flights have been diverted to other urban centres, where passengers will first be screened for the virus.

Many Chinese cities including Beijing and Shanghai have also imposed a compulsory 14-day quarantine for all arrivals from abroad.

There were nearly 1,100 return international passenger flights scheduled to come to China this week.

There were another five deaths on Friday, according to the National Health Commission -- all in the province of Hubei where the virus first emerged late last year.

In total 81,340 people have been infected in China, and the outbreak has claimed 3,292 lives.

In true Thai fashion, we have 2 statements that contradict themselves i.e.

Persons over 70 years of age or with a history of illness as well as children under five years of age are banned from going outside

and

Children under five and adults above the age of 70 and those with underlying health problems are strongly recommended to stay home.

Logic and common sense tell me the former is the correct statement, but this is Thailand, so either could be correct.

Does anybody know which is correct please? Do you have a definitive source of information?

I need to know because I am now 1 day into total isolation, but before that Mrs BB and I had started a daily 'no risk' walking regime in an area where we had passed 2 other 'masked up' people in the previous 4 days. We would love to continue with our walks, but with roadblocks and the high penalties for breaking the rules we are still working with the first statement.

As I posted above, the Thai version says "should", but later updates may change that.

Yes, but the question was does anybody actually know - is there there a definitive source of information for Farangs? There are dozens of versions of every instruction in Thai (usually posted as .jpg to make translation for thickos like me very difficult), where/how do we find the correct version? I thought the government had advised it would control news in times of crisis. We've got the crisis, but I see little control.

You'd think that the govt. could just ask someone, who's native language is English, to proof read all translations. They could avoid loss of face by not mentioning who did the translation and threaten anyone who leaked the information with 15 yrs. of hard labor in a N. Korean concentration camp.

Social measures

On 17 March, Thai authorities introduced measures that place restrictions on public gatherings, popular tourist events such as full moon parties and Songkran celebrations. On 21 March the Governor of Bangkok announced a further set of restrictions in Bangkok including closing malls and markets from 22 March – 12 April. Supermarkets, pharmacies, sections in malls selling foodstuffs and restaurants offering takeaway service remain open. Many entertainment venues such as pubs and clubs, and educational institutions are already closed. Other provinces have imposed similar restrictions. On 24 March the Thai authorities introduced instructions that all passengers must wear masks on all trains.

An emergency decree came into force on 26 March 2020 for, initially, one month. On 25 March the Thai authorities outlined a number of measures stating that individuals must not:

Enter high risk areas

Hoard essential goods

Attend public gatherings

Propagate false information

Further measures may be introduced at any time. All British nationals are advised to follow the advice of the Thai authorities.

On 27 March 2020 the Thai Department of Disease Control linked the smoking of cigarettes to the impact of coronavirus. Smoking in public could result in a fine of up to 5,000 Baht. Electronic cigarettes are already illegal in Thailand and their use may incur further fines or imprisonment.

Since 26 March 2020 the Thai authorities have been implementing measures to deter travelling between provinces. Some public transport routes will be closed in the comings day and internal travel is likely to become more difficult. There are a number of checkpoints in place across Thailand so you should carry a passport as proof of identification when in public.

All British nationals in Thailand are advised to remain up to date with the latest health advice provided by Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health and updates from the Thai Government on the situation.

I read an article the other day, I think it may well have been The Guardian, comparing the press conference styles of Boris and Trump to that of other European leaders. Whilst the leaders of Europe kept a safe distance from others it was clear that Boris and Donnie kept no distancing whatsoever.

To be fair, Boris and his mates have been on 3 separated lecterns and the last two have all reporters on video. Whereas Trump with all his bluster, crowds round one mike with his team.
I've seen an article comparing his pressers with other leaders around the world. Just look at the WHO. Far apart and questions from reporters by video conferencing.
