Good press. However, the normal death rate for Hubei province (58.5 million) based on the national statistic of 7.3 per 1,000 would give a normal death tally of 35,500 per month. Take that over 3 months and you have a natural death toll of over 100,000. That's before you count in Covid19.

Because of the aggressive lockdown, I'm pretty sure there'd be a massive backlog of 'natural' deaths. So now it's catch-up.

We'll probably never know.

I think the point is that these regimes have been lying from the start. Now China is blaming the West for it - it is just one big buck passing exercise and an excuse to vent xenophobia.

Agreed and China doesn't stand alone in the blame game or manipulation of the figures.

As I said. We'll probably never know.

Thanks for replying. Have been in contact with "my usual Hua Hin driver" They still drive but 2-3 checkpoints on the journey with temperature checks but no demand for certificates from doctor and have to wear mask in the Taxi. However as I understood last trip with "foreigners departing Thailand" is tomorrow but until further notice Bangkok to Hua Hin with domestic travelers was ok.

Phuket shuts its doors for a month to fight against the coronavirus outbreak.

The resort island of Phuket shut its doors on Monday morning prohibiting entry by land and sea to fight against the outbreak of coronavirus.

Phuket’s governor ordered all land and sea entry points shut at 12:01 AM on Monday until April 30 with the only exceptions being trucks transporting supplies and commercial vessels. Crews from commercial vessels must remain on board while docking.

It will be interesting to see how much workers are penalized for the government lockdown here in Thailand at the end of the month regarding salary. OK, they said 5000 per person a month to the informal sector but they are probably planning to slash the numbers down to about 5 million from the 14 million that have applied ...can't do that many for 3 months.

As usual, the law and constitution is opaque and hard to pin down on this and I see many companies worming their way out of some % of workers salaries (25-50% maybe) or not paying at all. Seems that the caveat is that if the government closes down places then the companies are much freer to get away with stuff. This could lead to all sorts of chaotic things if allowed to last as so many are day-to-day types that need their 500 baht a day and have no savings plus debts.

Read this article in the BBK Post this morning and it's a good read, if slightly long, on the matter.

https://www.bangkokpost.com/business/18 ... ng-caution

If indeed workers salaries are cut then I can see some big debt defaults coming in the next few months and that could be a big disaster for many lenders too. Going to be a mess and I don't think the government is prepared to realise what the cold hard light of the day has to say on it.

As mentioned by PeteC in another thread, alcoholism could well be a significant problem due to lockdown(s) due to the Coronavirus. Access to online sales of alcohol, boredom etc.

This article from The Guardian (UK) - bloody frightening and not something I would have expected in/from Greenland (violence/abuse): -

"The sale of alcohol has been banned in the Greenland capital, Nuuk, in an attempt to reduce violence against children during the period of confinement caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

“In such a situation, we have to take numerous measures to avoid infection,” the prime minister, Kim Kielsen, said on Saturday.

“But at the heart of my decision is the protection of children; they have to have a safe home.”

Nearly one in three people living in the autonomous Danish Arctic territory suffered sexual abuse during childhood. Experts link the abuse to alcohol, drugs and ignorance of children’s rights.

After Greenland closed down schools on Monday with 10 cases of coronavirus diagnosed, a rise in violence followed.

“Unfortunately, in Nuuk, domestic violence has been on the rise in recent weeks,” the health minister, Martha Abelsen, told local media. Excessive drinking by parents exposed children to dangers in the home, Greenlanders were warned."

Thailand is beginning to ban sales of alcohol due to coronavirus spread. The first place effected for 2 weeks is Sakhon Nakhon. Many more to follow. Time to stock up chaps. :D

Here in the UK the government understands that, above all else, we need alcohol right now.

Translation is ambiguous.

Close all shops selling alcohol - 7/11's I doubt that.

Sales of alcohol prohibited - probably.

Will that measure stop the spread of the coronavirus - I, also, doubt that.

Same here in Europe, in fact judging by my colleagues and my experience of lockdown, the alcohol consumption might kill us before Covid!
One thing that I've discovered is that wine here is incredibly cheap compared with Thailand. I never used to drink at home here but I bought a 5L box of red today for less than 300bt! ( Obviously not one for the connoisseur.)
