What I've heard is that if you are a farang, you can't drive your own tuk tuk.
A friend of mine has his own tuk tuk here in Hua Hin, but is prohibited by law to drive himself. He had to hire a Thai driver.
He bought his tuk tuk from TT-Mike.
You can not buy a new 3 wheel tuk tuk, only old, rebuild and upgraded vehicles. New models are not in production in Thailand.
This is what I've been told.

TTM is tuk tuk Mike. Search for his posts. He is still a member but doesn't post very often. I think those vehicles were in the impound lot because it wasn't clear what they were & whether their owners had the correct licences or right to drive themNomad wrote:Who is TTM? Do you know why the rental cars (Virgin?)tuk tuk was in the police impound lot?

How about a trike ?
theres a few floating about, theres a shop near the HHAD office that prepared one a year or so ago which was for a pale face ,
quite well fabricated using a 400cc bike unit[/quote]
Thanks for your input all.
I would love to have a trike like that. I have a car driveing licence but not for a bike. Do you think i can take the bike licence if i show up with a trike where they take the licence? I have lost my balance, thats why i ask so many silly questions about this.

It would be interesting to find out, but you may throw them into a state of confusion that would last for days.Jack Daniel wrote:Do you think i can take the bike licence if i show up with a trike where they take the licence? For sure though, don't mention anything to them about your lose of balance, just say you feel safer with a trike and it's less dangerous for everyone.
Let us know if you do it. Cheers. Pete

trike
I am thinking of building trike when I move out using shaft bike and tuk tuk back end have built a few back here so cant see problem.surely if you have both bike and car licence should be no problem you are only adding extra wheel as with sidecar.

So if I understand you correctly you are only interested in the rear wheels and drive assemblies.
Working Tuk Tuks are generally driven into the ground and when they become unrepairable they are canabalized. There was a place that did this near where I used to live ion Nonthaburi. I don't think you will find anything like that in the Hua Hin area.
If you did find one it would only be able to cater for a fairly small powered engine.
I have seen what I think you mean many times in the UK. They are usually ridden by leather jacketed bikers and are well maintained. The modification from a drive shaft bike were done with the aid of a kit from a custom bike accessory and modification dealers.
The one guy that I knew that had one told me that the mods cost about as much as the bike.
It would be worth looking into while you are into the UK You might find that you can import the kit into Thailand without too much hassle and it could well be cheaper. Don't forget you should be able to get the VAT back.
The other thing worth doing is to contact the biker clubs in Thailand and see what they know.

I am not sure about trikes STEVE but certainly beach buggies were made from them. Remember the VW is rear engined. So you could make a trike with the VW back end and a single wheel assembly welded to the front. I have never seen it done though.STEVE G wrote:Didn’t people use to make trikes from the back end of a Volkswagen Beetle? If that’s the case there is a place just past the Royal Palace on the right that messes around with Beetles.
Just a thought here. If you can do it with a VW you can do it with a Porsche. Now that could be fun.
