Experiment shows the danger of common face mask mistake

An epidemiologist has warned those wearing masks amid the coronavirus pandemic to avoid a common mistake that can unknowingly spread the virus.

Infection preventionist Sarah Milligan of Texas shared several images to Twitter on Thursday which revealed the spread of germs when masks are moved up and down users’ faces.

While she views masks as “completely ineffective” of preventing transmission, she said if a mask is worn it is vital it remains worn properly and undisturbed.

Ms Milligan said if the wearer needs to remove it, the whole mask needs to be carefully removed and not moved to another part of the face such as under the chin.

One of the ultraviolet light images she shared shows how germs are dragged from the outside of the mask onto the neck area.
“When you put a dirty mask under your nose or chin you may end up contaminating yourself,” she explained.

“Keeping it on will reduce the risk of self-contamination, but if it’s too uncomfortable just remove it completely and make sure to perform hand hygiene before and after,” she said.

She explained many people will drag the mask’s outer layer along their chin as they move it downwards, sometimes even twisting it around.

Associate Professor Ben Mullins at Curtin University’s School of Public Health, who is an aerosol deposition expert, previously told Yahoo News Australia that if a mask is worn for a prolonged period of time where the virus is present, the mask itself can become a hazard.

“Wearing them for too long, as they’re supposed to be disposable, they could actually become a vector for disease if someone is exposed to infected patients,” he explained.

Prof Mullins said the use of masks offered “almost zero protection” to the general public, suggesting it may only prevent people from directly touching their face with their hands.

Yet Duncan Fullerton, a respiratory consultant with the NHS, took to Ms Milligan’s post and explained that if that mask is then misused, it is putting the wearer at risk.

Protection to [the] wearer is minimal and as you correctly highlight may put [the] wearer at [a] greater risk if they touch their face more,” he said.

Ms Milligan’s post has since been retweeted over 4,500 times.

[Edit] Having read the Thai Enquirer link, and re-checking the Daily Brief (which actually says sales person, not assistant - sorry), I think the question should be asked where the Thai Enquirer's information is coming from, because it certainly isn't the CCSA.

The BP states 2 cases in Nonthaburi. What was happening there that meant 2 cases were detected?

Thai PBS World said on the 13th that 90 cases had been detected from those in quarantine, which is a pretty ambiguous statement, certainly nothing like that number has appeared in the stats for a long time.

April 25th had a figure of 53, 42 of those were from quarantine/detention. May 4th had 18 also from quarantine/detention. Since then most of the figures have been from returnees in quarantine.
If they class detention as quarantine, then the figures are quite valid.

Yes it sounds plausible, but I would have a lot more faith it they had actually spelt that out, rather than giving the impression, at least to me, that these 90 cases hadn't made it to the stats we are shown. In the same article, they stated that only approx. 34,000 had been tested, significantly less than claimed.

Thailand still can't get its numbers right. If you deduct the total recovered and deaths from the total infections you get 118. Minus those 61 serious off that, so what has happened to the remaining 57?

After getting infected there are only two options: recover or don't recover.

3,031 total infections minus 56 deaths equal 2,975 minus 2,857 recoveries equal 118 active cases of which 61 are serious.

I think your maths is a little flawed Buksi!

Nothing wrong with the maths as that still leaves 57 'infected'. So they're saying there are only 118 people in total in Thailand with COVID-19?

That is 0.000168% of the population (or 1 in 593,220) which makes this one of the safest countries in the world. And that's from being the second-highest infected in the world a couple of months ago.

And yes, the figures show that across Thailand there are only 118 currently confirmed cases.

Of course, just like every other country, these figures are only based on confirmed infections.

As Trump says, "If we do more testing then we're going to get more cases so better not to test!!" (one of his silliest statements)

I struggle to believe that from being the world's second highest, Thailand has dropped right to the bottom of the country list. But then I am cynical as we've already discovered. If you believe the numbers, Kiribati has more cases of Covid than Thailand, and that is a tiny South Pacific island.

Anyway, what you or I think is irrelevant so lets get back to news before those pesky mods get cranky ...

WHY are you taking 61 critical cases from the total of active cases (118) The 61 critical cases are active.
What you have done is show the 118 active cases as 61 critical and 57 non critical.

Your % of the population infected (0.000168%) would be correct if there had been 69 million tests which of course is not true.

It's not about what you or I THINK. I'm just pointing out that the published figures are correct as far as it goes.

They are "correct" to you if you BELIEVE the gooberment and what they decide to report. That is all YOU have to go on - nothing more. We all have the CHOICE to believe what we want, I'm just questioning things - which clearly others do not do in preference of blind acceptance of what they're told to be "true".

I wasn't saying that I accept the figures. Just pointing out that the numbers are calculated the same as every other country in the world. Whether the count for confirmed cases is correct or not is speculation which would also apply to every other country in the world.
