Sexual assault and rape in Thailand
This morning, in a 2 month old copy of the Nation, that I was putting down for the dogs, I found this report. I can't say how much it disturbs and saddens me, particularly certain aspects of it. The assault between relatives, the ages of some victims & alleged attackers, the nonchalance of the police... so many things I find very difficult to absorb...

I found out about incest here Dawn way back as a 20 year old and my jaw dropped. Nothing's changed since.
One good thing is that they are now publishing articles and statistics about it, which I doubt a western publication would do and a Thai paper never would do decades ago.
I think it's something more common in the west than we think, you just don't hear about it unless the daughter or niece or any woman comes forward and pushes for prosecution. That doesn't happen often.
It's a sickening, sub-human thing. Pete

defining rape.
I am sure a lot of girls here got their first experiences with relatives or family members. Have you seen how the poor people live? They often all sleep together in the same room, two to a bed or more. I am sure a lot of bargirls are forced to do things they might not want to do as a condition for keeping their job, either with the bar owner, or manager, or with the customers. I guess that is a form as rape as well, but since these are just bargirls, we treat them as sub human.
A good looking bar girl can make 40000 + a month, she works in the bar to make good money better than the canning factory at 14 hours a day . I dont think anyone even the lady would say she was rapped , she is in business to sell sex, and make money and party every night so dont feel sorry for her . She does not want your sympathy she wants your money. And its up to her how she gets it as a prostitute or factory worker or work the land for 30 bhat an hour.

Is it you and your friends?
All people I know, and that is quite a lot, treat bar girls kindly.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

The plight of women
Sadly, women (especially from the lower classes) in Buddhist Thailand are very much second-class citizens. I work with some of the most highly educated Thai Males (and females) who are as thick as two short planks. And I have spoken with many highly intelligent bar girls who have never had the opportunity that was given to me as a working class Brit - these are the ones who should be the ones doing PhDs.nevets wrote:Many of the books i have read by Thai authors , say that women working the bars had their first sexual encounter at the hands of a brother and or father. Even the brother charging his friends to go with his sister.
The rich girls ('tidy girls') ARE expected to behave themselves until they are married at 25, 30 or even 35. For the rest of society, used and abused by the time they are fourteen then it is a slippery downward slope. This is Buddhist Thailand sadly.

Hmm... I know some well-educated Ajarns, and students who behave the same way as any decent woman would in the West.
I also work with highly-educated Thais, and I would agree that not all of them are totally in touch with the real world, but they're not stupid. I can't quite get my head around a bar girl, with perhaps a poor education - however lovely and bright she may be - quite hacking doing extensive research for a PhD. But maybe I'm wrong...

Generalisations
I know that I was making some sweeping generalisations but this was to reduce the risk of me writing an essay on the subject.Vital Spark wrote:Hmm... I know some well-educated Ajarns, and students who behave the same way as any decent woman would in the West.![]()

What I basically meant about bar girls doing PhDs has to do with making full use of the human resources of this country. There is little to no incentive for a 'country girl' to get an education and 'get on in life' when she will only earn 15000 Baht a month as a researcher!
Some very rich but not-so-bright folk are filling positions that some poor but bright people could be using to help this country develop.
Since moving to Thailand I have always felt fortunate to have been born in the UK - some pretty good Karma came my way. I was the first in our family to enjoy education beyond sixteen and went the full hog. In Thailand I probably would have been a taxi driver!

thai living
its far to easy to generalise.
you have to remember that thai society doesnt have the safety net of a generous welfare system.
they may not have the academic qualifications of the west but they sure know how to survive with limited & basic resources & their survival instincts are far superior to the pampered western nations.
on the original topic of attacks & rapes, most men who carry out these acts are particularly weak willed & unable to cut it in mainstream society so have to enforce their will on the weak & vunerable to get their power trip.
how the subject veered towards bar girls i'm not quite sure. most are from the poorest areas of thailand & to them its just a job & a means of survival of not only themselves but their families too. we shouldnt therefore be so critical. they are certainly not sub human & still deserve to be treated with a little respect.
