Student protests in Thailand

Activists stage anti-govt protests in three centres as police watch
A group of youth-led activists staged an anti-government walking protest through the city streets in central Bangkok on Saturday.
The group, called Kloom Luek Kang Prachathippatai (Choosing the Side of Democracy), led protesters on a march from Ratchadamri Road to the Victory Monument. About 5pm, the protesters made their way down Ratchaprarop Road, the Rajavithi Road and Phaya Thai Road.
Phattharapol Thanadetpornlert, the group co-leader, said the march was part of a campaign to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and return democracy to the people after the army engineered the military coup in 2014.

UP TO 31 MAY BE TARGETED IN LATEST PROTEST CRACKDOWN
A large police operation appears to be underway on Friday to arrest the leaders behind ongoing anti-government protests, with at least two campaigners already in custody.
Arnon Nampha and Panupong Jadnok were detained in Bangkok earlier today and charged with insurrection for their roles in the protests calling for the government’s reform, human rights lawyer Yaowalak Anuphan said, adding that at least 31 people are marked for arrests.
Police spokesman Kissana Phattanacharoen declined to confirm the figures, but said all suspects will be treated in accordance with the legal processes.

Dictators doing what dictators do, this is exactly why they will not drop the emergency decree. Covid has given the junta exactly what it wanted - absolute power.

And just proves that Prayet's word means nothing.
But I don't think this will go away so easily.

Re: Student protests in Thailand
I guess the Junta is trying to "cut off the snake's head", as they see it, by strong-arming them to see how serious the students are. It's a risky move as it will either make the protest fizzle out or make them worse by justifying the students' stance ... personally, I think it's a mistake to arrest the protest leaders as it just makes them look like what they are accused of being. I don't think this old way of thinking and the patronage system can last much longer as the Internet/Netflix generation that is growing up couldn't care less about the values of the old world and the need to be compliant to your betters sort of nonsense that has gone before ... the writing is on the wall. I'll give it 10-15 years and the dinosaurs will be swept away.

I really hope so.....it would be nice to see Thai people happy and smiling again.
Thanks to smartphones and tech, the youth are now educated beyond control of the scum.
Nearly 7 years of these insidious morons decimating the country is finally taking its toll I hope.
And they were too stupid to recognize this was going to happen.
This is not going to change...ever.
C'mon you young uns....you've got my backing all the way.

Re: Student protests in Thailand
Even the junta compliant Bangkok Post is criticising the Police for the arrests. Seems the Police will be the whipping boys if, as last night's reaction shows, the students won't be cowed, as we all know the order to arrest will have come from elsewhere.

This is a great point. Just like respect, patronage should be earnt and not given. Maintaining loyalty to such values takes work and a sense of giving back by the leadership.Spitfire wrote: I don't think this old way of thinking and the patronage system can last much longer as the Internet/Netflix generation that is growing up couldn't care less about the values of the old world and the need to be compliant to your betters sort of nonsense that has gone before ... the writing is on the wall. Or, perhaps, respect should be automatically given and withheld when it's been proven that the object of respect, through words and deeds is proven to be no longer worthy of it. I thought we were innocent until proven guilty.

Let’s hope that now we are in the age of social media where news travels around the world in seconds, that the Thai army will be more restrained against shooting at its own citizens.
As Trump said the other day when he was referring to “Thighland”. He likes the leader very much. So a bit more more pressure on him to behave.

I doubt that the dear leader cares one way or the other. Especially since Trump may be gone in 6 months.

Re: Student protests in Thailand
It's a waste of time and energy to ask the govt. to step down. Never happened, never will. No one gives up power without a struggle. It will take forces within the govt. to bring it down or another coup and the army is not going to rebel against itself.

High school students across Thailand in remarkable show of solidarity with anti-government protests
High school students throughout Thailand raised three fingers while adorning white ribbons during the daily flag-raising ceremony on Monday to stand in solidarity with the ongoing anti-government protests.
The movement trended on Twitter with the hashtag, #โรงเรียนหน้าเขาไม่เอาเผด็จการ (the next schools will not tolerate dictatorships), garnering over 650,000 tweets since Monday morning.
Photos and video footage of the flash mobs, which were mostly filmed by the students, are also going viral online.
Students from Hatyai Wittayalai to Srikranuanwittayakom School in Khon Kaen stood in defiance against the government despite protests from their teachers.
Some students have also claimed they are being threatened and punished by their teachers and authorities for their activism.
