Which Mobile Phone?
Re: Which Mobile Phone?
I've said it already, but as you're talking A10, you get a hell of a lot of phone for under 5K with the A20+. This spec would have probably cost 12,000฿+ a year ago. The phones I've bought for the family aren't old enough to comment on the battery degradation, but a few months in, the signs are very good.

I believe it’s now available in Thailand - the Moto G Fast gets very good reviews and has a target price of around 6000 Baht. Alternatively the Moto G Power but that’s around 8000 Baht

You could be right - although you can find out fairly detailed information and prices about it, I can’t actually find anybody selling it.thecolonel wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 10:10 amAre you sure available Thailand Dannie?Dannie Boy wrote:I believe it’s now available in Thailand - the Moto G Fast gets very good reviews and has a target price of around 6000 Baht. I don't know if he's replaced the battery, I do know that he uses the phone every day. Some people don't need 4 cameras or every app available. Some people just need to make and receive phone calls, check their email and send lines, others want a toy to play with. "You pays your money and you takes your choice."buksida wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 6:27 amUseless comparison as that would have cost way more than 12k when purchased new and may have been seldom used for the time period. I should have said 'last 2-3 years before any noticeable performance decrease' - a seven year old phone is going to be painful to use today, won't update, and wont even run half the apps available.handdrummer wrote: ↑Tue Sep 29, 2020 6:16 pm My son-in-law has an iphone 5 that is working fine after 7 + yrs.
Additionally, batteries have a set number of cycles before they begin to deteriorate, so heavy phone users will get a lower lifespan no matter what flavour the phone is, especially now that all batteries are built-in. A pal has a Samsung J7 that has worked fine for 6 years as it is sat on a shelf for most of the time.
Back to recommended phones, the Samsung M31 or Redmi Note 9 Pro are the leading contenders within budget at the moment. Wouldn't touch Apple even if it was free (but lets not drag that tired old debate up again, there is another thread on it somewhere.)

Exacly, hence the futility in making such comparisons.

Can't say I'd heard of the A20 before, so thought I'd have a look to see how it compared with the A10 - favourably I must admit! However, during the search I came across the A40 which has a significantly better spec IMHO especially on the camera front without a significant increase in price (around the £230 mark in the UK).
Not sure if this would be available in Thailand, but well worth the look.

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
Can't say I'm one who needs or must have the "latest technology". I'm one that looks for something (in this case a mobile phone) that does the job I need it to do at a reasonable price and that is reliable. Software updates are not a real issue for me as these would only effect newer apps IMO. Battery life is an obvious consideration, but this comes under "reliability".thecolonel wrote: ↑Wed Sep 30, 2020 6:39 pm18 months old though.... that's half of its technological shelf life gone already

If I'm happy with the 25 MP camera on my existing phone for example, why would I feel the need to spend money in order to change to the latest upgrade?

Re: Which Mobile Phone?
i bought a Poco(Xiaomi) X3 NFC 128gb, arrived a week ago and have been testing it before commentinghanddrummer wrote:Please let us know what you buy.
Beforehand, i watched about 12 reviews on Youtube, they all said it was the best budget smartphone this year
My thoughts after a week:
Audio- I had a problem with other potential devices not being as loud as
my 3 year old phone
but this one the sound is slightly better than my last, so im well happy
with that
Also, its a joy to listen to podcasts/music without necessarily using
headphones as it comes with built in 'stereo' loudspeakers.
Battery(5160mAh)- is very good, maybe not quite as good as they purport
but even so i reckon the average user would get 2 days out of
it! I get between one ( full intense) day to 1.5days normal
but fast charging, which is all new to me, is great especially if you
forget to recharge overnight
(side note: apparently you should only charge your phone to 80% as
repeated charging to 100% shortens its life)
Size-the size of the phone at 6.67 inches is not ideal for me but i
think i can just about live with it, i preferred my 5.5 inch. You really
notice the weight and size/bulk when getting in/out of pocket. But it's
not a deal breaker
Camera- im not that fussed about cameras and to be blunt i dont see what
all the fuss is about with these 64MP Quad camera mullarkey, pics dont
really look that differnet to me. Its cool to able to zoom in on videos
though which are also shot at 4k res.
NFC- ive set up Google Pay but not used yet
Speed- excellent(6gb RAM) Storage i coughed up an extra 5/600 baht for
the 128 GB of storage version
Screen- IPS LED, really good, not AMOLED but perfectly good enough, i could happily watch Netflix on a plane/ taxi to BKK etc(ie when laptop not practical)
Price- I got it through JD Central Bkk 7199 baht, ordered Monday arrived
Thursday
Ps oh and it makes phone calls too

Oh yes...Ms Tigger wrote:@thecolonel is it dual sim?
I couldn't possibly buy a phone that wasn't(not that you know that)!
One other thing i forgot to mention in my review.... once you've had an IR blaster in your phone(like I had) it's very hard to buy another phone without it. Very handy when relaxing indoors and need to turn on fan/ac/tv etc
See this review but there are many more
