OK, I'm almost tea total, so bars being closed doesn't bother me that much, but this problem goes way beyond bars. Just look at the 13 restrictions lifted by (20 cases a day) Bangkok a week ago. How many people would similar actions in (1 case in 9 months) Prachuap put back at work? Bar opening is simply the cherry on top of the cake. Incidentally, I read earlier that Chiang Mai where bars were re-opened is like a ghost town.

To get the economy going it will take more than opening bars for the few remaining thirsty Expats. We need things to open up across the board, and get the Thai population spending as well.

The problem is, that a large proportion of the Thai population doesn’t have any money to spend, so the only thing that will help kickstart the economy is the opening of the borders to tourists and that’s many, many months away!!

Sorry, seen it twice now and just can't stop myself...

It's "teetotal".

Teetotalism is the practice or promotion of complete personal abstinence from alcoholic beverages. A person who practises (and possibly advocates) teetotalism is called a teetotaler (plural teetotalers) or is simply said to be teetotal. The teetotalism movement was first started in Preston, England, in the early 19th century. The Preston Temperance Society was founded in 1833 by Joseph Livesey, who was to become a leader of the temperance movement and the author of The Pledge: "We agree to abstain from all liquors of an intoxicating quality whether ale, porter, wine or ardent spirits, except as medicine." Today, a number of temperance organizations exist that promote teetotalism as a virtue.

My favourite theory of the origin of the word is:

Teetotalers.—The origin of this convenient word, (as convenient almost, although not so general in its application as loafer,) is, we imagine, known but to few who use it. It originated, as we learn from the Landmark, with a man named Turner, a member of the Preston Temperance Society, who, having an impediment of speech, in addressing a meeting remarked, that partial abstinence from intoxicating liquors would not do; they must insist upon tee-tee-(stammering) tee total abstinence. Hence total abstainers have been called teetotalers.

VACCINE REGISTRATION PUSHED BACK, 1ST SIGN OF DELAY IN INOCULATION DRIVE
Thailand’s ambitious plan to vaccinate its population against COVID-19 already ran into a delay, while a new virus fatality and more than 800 fresh infections were reported on Wednesday.

Registration for the first doses, which was previously slated to take place within this month, is now pushed back to Feb. 12, the government said – just two days before the jabs are supposed to be rolled out. Officials have yet to figure out how the registration will proceed either.

“Frontline health workers in high-risk areas will be able to register through the application ‘Mhor Prom’ on Feb. 12. As for the members of the public, we’re still deliberating on the appropriate channels for registration,” Health Ministry perm sec Sophon Mekthon told reporters on Tuesday.

The delay highlights the uncertain nature of the inoculation drive, which aims to cover at least 60 percent of the population.

Nothing seems to be set in stone as of Wednesday, with just several weeks to go before the campaign begins. For instance, the government has said the first shipment of vaccine to be used in the initial phase would be provided by China-based Sinovac. But the regulators haven’t yet granted approval for Sinovac. The first doses will be provided by British pharmaceutical AstraZeneca instead.

The government on Tuesday also announced its timeline for the vaccination drive, dividing it into three phases. Each person will need two doses for an effective protection against COVID-19. Those under 18 and pregnant women will not be eligible for the vaccines as of now.

Phase 1 will run from February to April, focusing on vulnerable populations living in five provinces hardest hit by the virus and frontline healthcare workers.

According to the government, this phase will cover precisely 19,014,154 people. They include 1,700,000 frontline healthcare workers, 6,163,095 people with pre-existing medical conditions deemed to be at risk, and 11,136,059 people over 60.

This second at-risk group is said to cover 4.8 million people living with diabetes, as well as 253,159 people with respiratory disease, 350,922 people with heart disease, 150,000 with kidney disease, 355,671 people prone to strokes, and 253,343 people with cancer.

Phase 2, from May to December, will expand to vulnerable groups in the rest of the country.

The last stage, Phase 3, is for the general public. It won’t start until January 2022, health officials said.

Schools are back on 1st Feb with some exceptions/restrictions. Samut Sakhon stay closed, and the serious areas have class size restrictions.

I notice that the previous notice with regard to school opening is from the Ministry of Education. The CSA today stated that this was just one of a number of proposals that will be decided upon on Friday. The CSA is chaired by Chano Cha. So who has the final say? The Prime Minister of the Ministry of Education?
I ask because one of my granddaughters living here at the moment goes to school in Nongkaam which is adjacent to Samut Sakhon. Her grandmother has just called to say her school opens on 1st Feb!
